Some people do it by hand. I use a pair of long nose pliers. Put the open end in first. Then using a turning, squeezing motion by holding the centre section it should pop in. I rotate the clip to make sure it is seated properly all the way round Always have the gap at the top of bottom.

What do you think of clipping off the tang? Purpose would be to reduce flex due to reciprocating mass?

You can buy a style that does not have a tang on. I would not risk it though. You might distort the clip, with disastrous consequences

I've used a lot of tangless clips with no failures. It does take a lot of care to install without getting a tiny chunk of piston knocked off in the process. Thinking about it now, putting a small radius on the opening for the wrist pin in the edge of the piston, then oil, would have been better. As you said, the critical item is having the opening of the clip face up or down.

Stuff a bit of clean rag in the open crankcase mouth when installing circlips , nothing like dropping one down there and having to split the engine to get it out 😊

Don't reuse them! I learned that the hard way. You take them out they go immediately in the trash.
