I have an 09 Eton Beamer that i installed a Polini 70cc kit on over the winter. I basically copied the BBK install guide on this forum, very handy, thanks! Just pulled it out for time, started right up, idles fine but won't rev very high. If i twist the throttle past 1/4 it dies like the key was turned off. It's stock except for the BBK and a 95 main jet. I've changed plugs, fuel, cleaned the carb, no luck.
0-1/4 throttle is great i rode it at 1/4 for a mile at about 25MPH. 1/4 to full throttle it dies instantly.
Any ideas? I've spent hours this winter reading this forum and watching the videos and i have used the search feature. I'm stumped.

Maybe the "e" clip on the carb needle came off.

Hope you have the stock airbox installed with the snorkel removed..Eton has a DC CDI,so a full charged battery is a must for proper running...

Blocked main jet?

Some carbs have a removeable needle jet. I once had a flake of something find its way to the space between the needle jet and the carb body. A real PIA to find. Had to take the slide and needle, main jet; then carefully push out the needle jet. Check the jet space and the air passage from the carb inlet. Be sure the needle jet air holes are open.

I didn't think about the CDI. The battery was strong enough to start it, but i'll throw the charger on it anyway.
I should have mentioned that the air box was not stock. The stock rubber elbow on the air box had work hardened and didn't really line up right. It was really just next to the carburetor, not attached prior to adding the BBK. I ordered another one and it didn't line up either. I tried to make one good one out of the parts i had but that rubber elbow piece just didn't line up correctly. Out of frustration i made my own air filter. I did however experiment with using tape to restrict airflow on my home made filter, no difference.
The carb had no blockages that i could see, cleaner flowed through the parts i couldn't see. I guess i can take it apart again though.
Thanks for the ideas!

what is the carb size and manufacturer/ style/ type. if its manual choke, see if it runs better on choke, if its electric, see if it runs better when first started. if yes, idle circuit or needle too lean. main jet could be wrong also. but if lean on the first two circuits, it will be a PITA to tune properly. especially with a non stock air box. I tune carbs from bottom up. take main jet out and retune idle then needle. then put your main jet in and see if it runs with a 95. change main from there accordingly. not all carbs tune the same. some will let a lean idle and/or mid/ needle circuit pass, some will play hell making you figure it out. there is 3 basic circuits to a carb. different manufactures or types of carbs overlap these circuits differently. so tuning a delorto is different than a kehein and different than a mikuni. similar but nothing alike. good luck. keep us posted. FTW

I'm assuming that it ran fine last year before being stored?
Have you checked the reed cage and those gaskets? I've had sticky reeds cause some really frustrating crap when tuning my Beamer.
The way it sounds from your description, is that it is leaning out past quarter throttle, which means one of two things could be causing it. One, there's a blockage in the carb somewhere, Two, there is an air leak somewhere...

quick update: I pulled and completely went through the carb, nothing blocked. The carb is the stock "sunworld" mikuni style with a manual choke. Not sure of the size, maybe 16-18. The battery is fully charged. I ordered another stock air box, might have it next week. I have never tried to tune anything without the main jet installed. I didn't even think it would run without being installed. It did run fine when it was parked this fall. When I pulled the carb this last time I put a wrench on the reed cage bolts but is did not remove or clean. I did run some propane around the intake with no change in RPM. Maybe time to build a leak tester.
Thanks for all the input.
While the carb was out i put the stock 85 jet back in at the request of a local who believed that i made too large of a increase and i was flooding it. I can verify that 85 is WAY too lean, turned my very dark plug a clean white in a quarter mile! Also had spark knock.

If it turns OFF like you flipped a switch, you might want to check that the CDI is functional beyond XYZ rpms. As I understand, they depend on a capacitor to charge and discharge appropriately, and if the capacitance is 'off', they'll not work correctly. If you have a spare that will work, give that a shot. tom

lurch there is a guide here that a member was so kind to make, that explains how to replace the $100 ETon CDI with a blue unit for I think a Dio. Its a great mod, easy, and I can day from experience it works very well. Though the system (stock) is DC I ran mine without a battery for a season and a half and never had a single engine problem.related to it. I went he capacitor route, and that worked fine.
