A leak most likely. You need to locate exactly where the gas is coming from, there is no way of doing this over the internet.

I know but any clue as to why it started leaking gas? Could it be the carb?

I know but any clue as to why it started leaking gas? Could it be the carb? Yes could be the carb. Because it's broken/faulty probably. If it's the carburetor that is. Could be something else.

Check where the leak appears. If it leaks from the carb - either the float needle valve is faulty or the carb bowl drain screw is leaking
If it leaks from the fuel tank - either the fuel tanks' valve leaks around it (which would require a new O ring) or the fuel line is punctured.
Anyways, locate the leak and report to us.

If the vacuum petcock fails, you will have fuel available to fill the float bowl 24X7. Normally, there is no fuel pressure on the float valve when the petcock closes as vacuum from a running engine drops. If the float valve fails, you will get fuel running out of the air cleaner as fuel will fill the float and overflow into the carburetor itself, finally dribbling out the inlet side through the rubber tube to the air cleaner assembly and then drip on the ground. In that case two things to check: 1)petcock shutoff function and 2) float valve and seat function. tom

The leak is coming from the carb area and is slowly dripping out the bottom. Is this a major issue and a costly fix?

With some carbs the bowl drain valve is an integral part of the fuel bowl.
Just find the leak and fix it instead of wondering about all the possibilities and ramifications...

I had a leak once when I filled the tank up very close to full - and parked it on my front porch - on the side stand - so the bike was leaning to the left - and the sending unit is on the left side of the tank , on top. Never found a leak . After I saw it leaking ( big puddle of gas on concrete ) I put it up on center stand . No more leak/puddle . I concluded my sending unit gasket on top of tank , leaks . Haven't fixed yet . I just don't fill tank all the way to top.

If your float needle isn't sealing properly or if the float is set a bit high it can let more fuel than needs drain into the bowl and overflow out the bottom of the carb. Could be a quick free fix if that's all it is...

It is fixed. It was the float needle.
