Hello all, its been awhile! I have been very busy but started riding my modified 50cc that has a 72cc BBK on it. This scooter has been thru a lot and is very beat up, has been stripped down and could use TLC but actually rund pretty darn good. I think it started as a 139QMB longcase with 13" tires, I was riding a ton last year, actually had 3 scooters at one point but 1 burned up in a fire, one was a 150cc junker I gave away and the last 50cc I got the 72cc Big Bore Kit and better carb and some CVT work onto it last Fall...Many plastics are missing or broken or out of place a bit and I even have some makeshift pieces of plastic, metal and even a couple pieces of plywood covering wires and frame parts. I want to eventually either make it entirely a Naked Scooter with cleaned up wires OR get new/used plastics IF I can obtain dirt cheap & only IF they fir!!--OR I want to make custom plywood and/or metal and/or plastic panels and fairings for a lot of the bike to make a uniform, better look in which ever direction I go with it--then it will be good!!--for now...
ANyhow the real reason I am posting is because I was on my way to work yesterday and was pulled over and given a stern verbal warning!! The cop caught me at WOT hitting near top speed in those conditions of around 45 MPH (slight downhill, favorable wind, large wheels) a mile or so into a 2 mile perfectly straight and very smooth slightly downhill road with a speed limit that had just dropped from 45 MPH to a 30 then 25MPH Zone near a school, not sure if it is part of the actual school zone because the school is around the corner, and the cop didn't mention that to me but he did cite me verbally going "a little over 45 in a 25 "..Then he saw I didn't have plates nor did I ever bother to put a CT Moped paper or plastic plate on the back which on my old one says the state law number which says scooters in CT don't need to be registered/plated or insured! So the cop, he started asking me questions like is it a moped? If it's a moped how was it going so fast? DO you have papers for it? (he asked for title, registration, and when I said I didnt have that he asked for a bill of sale and a manufacturer's certificate stating what the bike is, maybe because most or all of the brand/model designation markings are missing or not visible. I had none of the papers on me--I told him I think I have a bill of sale at home and maybe a title or MCO and definitley the Let Go website messages from the seller I bought it from if the site saves the info..but I was honest and said I left what I had miles away and couldnt remember exactly which papers I did have for the bike--The cop at that point said ok, like he didnt care too much about the papers, maybe he thought I didnt steal it or believed I had some appropriate papers at home..BUT the cop also was a bit irritated the whole time about my speeding, I think because he didn't want to let me go too easily even though he was working there alone and could've probably made a judgement call to do whatever he saw fit..SO the cop then asked if the bike had like a VIN # or anything identifying how big is the engine. I did find the 139qmb thing which I think had some kind of number which I dont know if the number under that is the frame number or what but the whole thing there was barely legible--I could only tell him it said 1P39QMB because I rmembered seeing it before on my other bike and knew thats what was under the dirt, burns chips gouges and what looked like spilled paint all over my well used scoot in near and around the general area of the centerstand and engine mounts and wher it says 139qmb.. he wrote that down but wanted to keep looking...so I did find a long vin # stamped under the seat (that seat doesnt even belong to that scooter, but I DID NOT bother to tell him that as I didnt want it anymore complicated! I think under the seat Only had the Vin number, maybe the obscure name of the scooter maker factory in China like Zhenjingsau--I cant remember if that seat even did say the company name or not cuz that isnt important--what was important is the cop wrote down that vin and wanted to keep looking for more info plates! so we looked all around the frame, I had thought at the time that I had seen a plaque with a vin number and more info riveted or affixed otherwise to the steering downtube or maybe you call it Head tube--I dunno--at that moment I couldnt remember where I had seen it but I did remember seeing info like that somehwere on that general area of another similar China scooter and on maybe the front of the downtube or trip tree parts of a KLX110 I had just helped sell a couple months prior--and on the KLX110 that plate said what year it was made, company and model name I think also VIN number and maybe more...so I told him I thought it was there and we started looking including me unsrewing some plywood I had out under where my feet sit and going up fro my feet around the head tube--I did find a spot where it looks like an info plate had been, like it had the outline of one but the plate wasnt there.
So it ended with the cop warning me, he said if I wasnt on my way to a job that it seemed like I need, then he woulda, shoulda had me either produce info or be towed. I tried again saying its a 50cc and he again said really? if it is im surprised it goes so fast and dont let me catch you out here on that again unless you get some acceptable paperwork on it! I left a little shook thinking about how there is a cop right there every 4th time (or maybe more often) when I ride to work--this is also really the only way I can go on a low power scooter since the other 2 ways are a mountain so steep and long Im honestly not sure my scoot would make it up and the last alternative route to work is a highway with varying speed limits from 55-65mph(way too fast for my scoot!! )
I found a bill of sale when I got home but zero paperwork that officially says what make model year and size the scooter is! So I was thinking oh no and took the Uber to work today, which is way more expensive and I cant keep affording that easily with my humble job pay. Amyhow I was thinking of how I can keep riding without papers I dont have and without worrying so much for when I will likely get pulled over ny the same COP again! I know he is just doing his job and I was speeding briefly in a 25mph zone but no one was walking in sight-like usual plus no bicycles and very few cars were in sight at the time--ANyhow Im thinking if he had found that headtube info plate saying the VIN the company name and VERY Importantly the 50cc original displacement size then I woulda probably been ok with the cop other than the speeding warning. Does anyone know whwere I can get a Chinese scoot headtube that at least says its a 50cc? Or even where I can get a Honda headtube tag saying its a 50cc? (so that it is marked as a moped and I will not need paperwork etc) I went on ebay and saw people selling all sorts of Honda z50 and trail 70 (some CT Trail 70s were 50cc) headtube tags BUT none of them actually said the engine displacement except a vintage one in French that said something like made in France or just France or something I dunno and said Honda Z50 Dax also--but I lost the link for now and would rather find one in English that says 50cc. I would even pay to have a custom one made--if anyone knows of where I can get a custom headtube info tag made--preferably it says a brand name, any brand name and 50cc or displacement and 50cc, thats basically all I need is make (maybe model) and 50cc also preferably a metal tag that gets either really good adhesive or riveted ore bolted on to the headtube ... I would greatly appreciate it if anyone knows where to get one pre made or custom ordered with whatever writing I want! Thanks everyone--hope that made some sense since I rambled thru my story plus added the questions all over the place and my typing and stroy telling is most def BAD right now because I didnt sleep last night and I've been downing weak coffe trying to stay awake the last 7 hours im falling half asleep at work ...Thanks all ride safe!!
