Hello, Im not sure how much new oil went in my engine at last oil change. I checked the oil numerous times and it read half on the stick. I went for a good ride and heard no clicking or anything. Would a 4 stroke with only like a half quart of oil in it make some clanking kind of noises when running? Im gonna check the oil again before I ride it again but was wondering.Thanx for any help.

When you checked and you saw that it was only half, why you did not fill up!?
Most stupid question i´ve ever read...

Dont quit your charm classes. As I said, I dont know how much oil went into it. After it measured low, I put more in, but couldnt get a clear reading. I then went for a lovely ride and the engine sounded great.Im wondering if an engine low on oil would make clicking or other noises.

If it´s too less oil to feed the oil pump, your engine will seize. Thats on full throttle about 10 sec on an air cooled 4T scoot... When you realize it by sound, it´s already too late.
And in your start post i could not read that you put something in. Just that you checked numerous times...
But also please tell me what engine it is.

Sorry. Its a Vip tao tao.It seems it dies pretty quick after its started if its gonna quit running. Its not like an old school engine, runs but clicks or clacks for a while before it dies if its low on oil? UPDATE 49cc chinese 4 stroke.

Then it must get 0.7L of oil with a change.

I always used take quart of oil, pour 1/2 cup out, then put the rest in your 150.

I always used take quart of oil, pour 1/2 cup out, then put the rest in your 150. He has a 49cc 139QMB, not a 150 GY6. And fact is, there must be 700ml, o,7 L, 0.74 quart, 0.185 Gallon, 700cc, use unit whatever you like, of oil in it. There is just one correct amount of oil for that engine, regardless of what unit you use....

The first mod on every vehicle I own is to take a big, ugly file and make crossways score marks across the dipstick. Sometimes I even remember to clean off the filings.

The amount specified varies with the vendor. Some say 700ml some say 750ml, some say 800.
Either way, check the dipstick. Remove, wipe, insert but do not screw it in. Remove. Observe. If you cannot see the oil because it is too clear, hold the dipstick so you can see light reflected to observe oil level. If you ran it too low, for too long, the engine would stop turning. Symptoms? Smoke, lack of noise as the engine would no longer rotate. It is not like a Chevy stove bolt six that clattered when it got a couple quarts too low. It will make no protest, and die with dignity. There are not hydraulic lifters to clatter, there are no pushrods, and the crankshaft bearings are ball bearings which will run for a while without lube, but eventually get too hot, and fail. You might seize the piston in the bore, but more likely will cook the rings and have no compression. Hint: Check your oil regularly until you know its oil consumption habits. Don't let it get below the hash marks on the dipstick. You can use 10W40 oil and most use oil approved for diesel engines when doing an oil change. The diesel will generally have more ZDDP additive which helps falt tapped cam followers. A good thing. Some recommend 15W40 grade, which is what I use. If I were in Boston in December... likely use a lighter grade. tom

Thanks Tom thats the answer I was trying to get.And yes I check the oil often. I guess the 49cc simply doesnt have the parts that would click- make noises like a conventional engine if really low on oil.
