Was tuning CVT, changed a spark plug, and changed a jet then somewhere along the way this tick started. It’s also not idling and is running very rough, but I think that’s just something gumming up the carb since I rejetted it, I figure something just got in there and I’ll clean it out. Aside from spark plug knock and changing the spark plug if that’s the issue, any ideas? youtu.be/6Is879cRwjc

Doesn't sound combustion related. Everything ok under the CVT cover?

Doesn't sound combustion related. Everything ok under the CVT cover? I didn’t think so either... as far as I can tell everything inside the CVT is good, but I’ll take another look today for sure. I did hear the noise, swap rollers and springs, reassemble, then continue hearing the noise, so it would have to be an error I repeated or something I missed when reassembling.

Tough one to figure from sound only...but check for a plug wire leak? Could be your whole issue. Just guessin'!

Tough one to figure from sound only...but check for a plug wire leak? Could be your whole issue. Just guessin'! And now it’s running, but just randomly dying as if it’s losing spark or something. It’ll run and ride just fine, but then if you let it idle it’ll just kaput within about 30 seconds or so. It’ll start right back up usually too. Also... I’ve noticed the spark plug boot has almost totally come off or totally come off while riding. It was just hanging off the plug and arcing like several inches the other day while I was still riding lol. Would this be a symptom of a bad plug wire? The boot can keep popping off somehow? Here’s a video of it acting funny. Was giving me a hard time starting here but did start up after I stopped the video and then died again. It gives you the basic idea of what’s going on. Could all of this this be indicative of a bad plug wire? If so, can anyone recommend a good wire and boot? youtu.be/kP1CA-cxKZI

Replace the coil/plug wire/boot with a high quality stock type. Skip the 'high perf' ones. Replace the plug while you're at it. Does your plug socket have a cushion in it to help center it on the insulator? If not, make one from tape wrapped around a plug insulator sticky side out and slide it into the socket. It'l hold the plug just enough to help guide it into place and keep the socket from twisting sideways and fracturing the insulator. Might be the problem. Gremlins have their best life when they learn to be intermittent.

kenho21...some plugs have a threaded nipple, based on the plug with the end terminal threads sticking out. Sometimes hold better if you have the correct plug wire. If the nipple type, the nipples can come loose. It may be stuck inside the plug wire...or simply gone. Notice the tiny wire inside the bottom terminal. It is for holding the threads with no nipple. The round ones, usually copper or aluminum are for the nipple type. (Also called terminal nuts)

Yeah, I thought maybe I just forgot that little cap on the plug, but it was removed and that wasn't the problem. I don't think my spark plug boot would even come close to mounting on a spark plug with the cap on anyway.
I tightened the wire down on the coil and plug side and the problem got a lot better. I also moved the throttle cable which seemed to be putting stress on the plug wire when I turned the throttle. That could have been why it was falling off.
It's still stuttering at idle a little, but it's not stalling. Took it for a little ride and it's 75% better. I'm going to try throwing a new boot and trimming or getting new wire today and if it's still not fixed, I'll try a coil next I suppose.

have you checked your reeds? ive had stock metal ones make that sound before they broke off and went into the engine. ive also had fibreglass and carbon fiber reeds that sounded like that when they chipped.

At the beginning of the season, but not very recently. I think I’m going to order a new set at any rate. It’s gettin up there in miles and I’ve been steadily increasing the degree of modification I’m willing to go to with this thing anyway. Anyone have any info anywhere as to what the different degrees of angles and stuff means with some of the performance reed valves?

send a link to some of the ones your looking at. some are the angle the carb goes into and i believe some reed blocks have the reeds themselves positioned a little differently. also some intakes use a larger reed block and larger reeds.
