Hello,
I am trying to do a quick fix to my daughter's scooter. The variator nut must have worked loose and the splines on the crank shaft are now rounded. the belt was shredded and so I added some shims to the crankshaft and one to the shaft to the clutch to even it out so the belt wouldn't be off centre. I ordered a belt that the shop said was the right size for the scooter 788X17X28 but it seemed too small. I could barely put it on and it there wasn't any slack at all. It was a cheap no Kevlar belt and after one week I fear that the belt is quickly disintegrating. I want to rider a better belt. I am hoping that reason the belt is breaking is that it is too small, not that the spline on the shaft are rounded and the variator washer is not seating in the splines. Could it be that there is a balance problem. Any thoughts?

Most of the Chinese 2T scoots use a 788 17 28 drive belt, but go with a Bando. Don't order cheap no name belts because they are known for failing quickly. Sizing can be off a little from one belt manufacturer to the next. You'll need to open the rear pulley to help you put the belt on.

I ordered a Malossi X-Kevlar Minarelli Short and I went a little larger 796 16.5 30. Without swapping out the Crankshaft due to the rounded splines, is there anything I can do to ensure that the Variator front pulley stays immovable to the crankshaft? The star washer is being eaten up because it cannot withstand the revs. My last resort is to do an crankshaft swap but I want her to be able to drive for 2 more months.

If the splines on the variator front half half worn away you would be better replacing it check you have all the washers and spacers for the assy, use a torque wrench when you rebuild it,some pictures will help to see the damage,

when you say "the star washer is being eaten up" do you mean that the splines on the star washer are getting worn too? is it the same star washer from when the belt broke too? Or have you been replacing it?
a solution to get it running, provided that you get a new star washer, would be to grind down the variator drive boss and shorten it a few millimeters. that would depend on how much of the crank splines that you have damaged. Basically, you have to shorten the drive boss in order to expose more of the crank where the splines are not damaged. That will allow you to engage that new star washer on some undamaged splines. Your "low gear" will be shitty because a "normal" size belt wont fit properly down into the front pulley. You probably will have to add some washers between the kick start pawl and the bevel washer to account for the amount that was taken off the drive boss' length. You probably might not be able to use the kick star too at that point, however the kick start gear in the cvt cover might still be able to kick out far enough to engage.
don't kid yourself by trying to use a worn star washer on newly exposed splines, it is only going to wear out again and damage the splines.
cheap drive belts tend to be shorter that what it's size says it is. the ones I bought were stiffer too. both of them started to rip threads from the sides. at first I thought it was because I installed the first cheap belt in the wrong direction (opposite of the direction arrows), but the second one did it too.
