I bought this 2014 sym mio (only 400 miles on it) which had been sitting in a garage for two years. It would turn over but would not fire. I have replaced ALL of the ignition components, spark plug, ignition coil, stator, even the cdi box. I cleaned the carb and checked the hoses for clogs and leaks but its all just very clean and very new but will not start! I am completely stumped and I wonder if anyone has advice or opinions? Thank you !!

Welcome to 49ccscoot! Always start with the basics. Can you verify spark at the plug while cranking? Is fuel getting to the combustion chamber; plug wet with fuel. Healthy compression?

Once you have checked the above check the kill switch circuit. You may need to trace the wires. Next check the timing pulse circuit. Then check the 120V ignition power circuit if you use an AC CDI. If you have a DC CDI then check the 12V battery feed.

To make things easier, I'd pull the spark plug, stuff it back into the connector, and lay it on the cylinder head. Crank the engine, ignition ON, and kill switch ON. You should see spark. When you cleaned the carb, did you remove and inspect the jets to insure they are open? Most times, they will plug up(the pilot, anyway) when stored with fuel left in the bowl. The needle valve may also stick due to gum, so be sure it moves freely when the float wants to open/close it. You can check for fuel in the bowl by loosening the drain screw built into the lower end of the float bowl. Do so, and see if you get fuel to drip out. No fuel==no start... check float, filter, petcock. If you have an AC powered CDI, you can essentially disconnect the wires to the ignition system, and the engine should produce fire and start. You'll have to choke it or pinch the fuel line to kill it, or re-connect the ignition switch wiring. Some machines have a kill switch built into the kick stand, and won't spark until the stand has been retracted. If you look, you can find a wiring diagram for the CDI, and disconnect the kill wire there to be sure you have no 'wiring' or 'switch' problems preventing startup. Most china scooters are AC operated. The Kymco brand is one that uses a DC CDI. You must supply 12V DC for it to work. DC CDI units are a lot larger, from what I read, and the one I have. You can squirt some fuel into the carb and with the ignition enabled(however you do it), when you kick it over, it should pop, even with no fuel in the tank, float, or a munged carburetor. tom
