Like the title says looking to upgrade the gears in my Taotao. I want to gain some top end but I don’t want to loose to much low end. Any suggestions?

Get a tachometer. Install and observe. If you are reaching 5-digit numbers, you may want to get a set of gears that will lower the final drive. You want to be sure you are not having slippage that allows the rpms to skyrocket while not moving effectively. That said, most don't generate enough power to make effective use of the 49:17 gear sets commonly available. Acceleration suffers, and the engine struggles at higher speeds. My personal take is they go fast enough with factory gearing - right around 40-45 with an ATM50A1 and 47mm BBK. I would not use a 'performance' CDI. Most are just modified to apply timing advance earlier than factory, which really doesn't help. The 'performance' coils seem to have reliability problems over most factory coils, which again indicates against their use. The word 'performance' seems to be an adjective that is used freely with no relation to providing any improvement in same. The exhaust in most is sufficient for the displacement. Replacement systems are close to or over $100US. Tune your variator and clutch/torque springs and you will find the most improvement, IMO. tom
