While looking at variators to help smooth my rpm transition. I came across this belt, 796-16.5-30, my current 788-17-28 belt doesn't make it to the outside of the factory rear pulley with the 788 belt. Also the belt on the Variator end doesn't make it to the outside edges. I could add a shim or spacer in the front to allow the Variator to spread a bit more but not close as tight on the top. I was thinking the extra 6mm might allow the belt to make it to the outside of the rear pulley. Anybody tried one ? If so what did you think? Thinking about getting a Malossi over range variator if I'm going to buy a better variator even if I can't use the full travel at the moment with my smaller rear pulley. www.scootertuning.ca/en/variators-racing-drive-belt/27014-drive-belt-malossi-x-kevlar.html

try it, the fact that its a bit thicker means it might wear into a sweet spot and or last longer. I doubt it will be long enough to come off the pulley. ive had it happen before it makes a mess

I just tried using a Malossi 796 X Special belt and it is physically shorter than a Bando 788. Even though it is physically narrower, it doesn't ride as high in either pulley and doesn't allow the rear pulley to close like the 788 Bando. If it wasn't riding as high because it was narrower you would think it would sit lower in the variator and the rear pulley would come to fully closed. I have been looking through belts, on Parts for Scooters website and they have a Gates 798 with the same specs for width etc as a Bando 788. They also have this Gates 805 belt. Anyone have any experience with these? I'm a little hesitant at this point as I'm not used to belt not conforming to a standard specification. Is the Gates 798 actually longer than a Bando 788? With the Gates 798 have the same specs except for length is it actually the same as a Bando 788? www.partsforscooters.com/106-64-Gates-Powerlink-Beltwww.partsforscooters.com/106-79_Gates_Premium_Belt

I would go the next size up in bando or malossi If you start trying to dial in a gates belt you will have to guess and then move from there . Belts seem to be like jets a 80 dellorto does not mean the same as a 80 teikei or 80 mikuni . If you read ryans post you wll see that the belt manufactures quoted sizing and actual are not consistent. 49ccscoot.proboards.com/thread/24543/top-performance-td-belt-length

Sent an email to parts for scooters to see if they can help. Used them for several parts so far with no issues.

I read through that, I saw the video version at some point. There is some really good I formation here if you can find its organised very well. Maybe I'm just being stubborn or unreasonable. If I'm not using both pulleys to the edges what am I leaving on the table to be used? At this point I'm tinkering and have a 19mm carburetor to install today and see how that goes.

www.partsforscooters.com/106-64-Gates-Powerlink-BeltThis Gates 805-18-28 measure a 796 rolling length according to Tom at Parts for Scooters. Just a little longer than what I have, going to order one and see what Happens. This is what I sent Tom, I’m trying to find a belt a little longer than a Bando 788-17-28. I have a Malossi 796 and it is actually shorter. Measuring it on the floor rolling the Malossi is about a 782. The Bando is about a 789. The Malossi only comes in at a 796 if you measure around the outside with a tape measure.
