So I acquired a free ETON Matrix with the long case Minarelli 50cc. The guy couldn't find the key, I said no biggie as I could more than likely replace it. I drug it out of the guy's yard because the back brake was seized. Loaded it up and took it home, title in hand. It has the recalled opposite switches - kill on left and high/low on right. Didn't mess with it for a few days until today. Pulled the rear caliper off and it rolls free! Both master cylinders are shot so I'll be replacing both brake systems. I tackle the plastic puzzle and get most of the cobwebs and spiders out of the way. Plastics aren't brittle and in fairly decent shape. I think I'll be repainting anyway. Got to the ignition and was shocked to see tamper proof screws like the Chinese carburetors have. No way to grab them and spin them out so I Dremel a notch for my flathead. No luck. Time for excessive force... Got that all sorted out and pulled the guts out of the ignition. I turn it with a screwdriver and the rear light comes on, and the horn works. I grab the brake and hit the starter and she cranks over with compression, but didn't fire. Choke cable, located on the handlebars, is seized up too. I reach down and manually choke the carb with my hand and it fired up! Ran like the idle was set really high, but it ran! So now I move to the master cylinders. Pull the handlebars shrouds up and my heart skipped beat. All empty, all clear. Get everything cleaned up and noted the masters I need to replace. This should be a fun project. I'll tackle the brakes then get the engine running... then it's to figure out which top end kit I wanna slap on it. Maybe a Naraku Traffic pipe to keep it stockish looking, we will see when the time comes.

That's a nice find, and I,ll just cut straight to it :)I use a naraku traffic on my 50cc commuter, justlove it to bits,I might go BBK with a naraku head NK102.83 and 70cc barrel NK100.31,the blurb says low end punch mid range power not a race set up,but a nice price.so go on be my test bed please.

aren't you worried you might have ruined the warranty on the ignition ?!
Man , that's a big ol helmet bucket on the back end .

Haha actually warranties are void when I acquire any vehicle 😆 But not worried at all. I can replace it, or do some Mad Maxx button and switch sequence... Just kidding. It is a weird 3 wire switch and I'm used to 4 and 5 wire. Also, the CDI is what appears to be a DC 4 stroke CDI and there's another box in the front that looks like a 5 pin CDI with only 4 wires. I'll figure it all out in time. Oh, the rear box is already removed...

Nice project. Who's bright idea was it to put the kill switch where the lights normally are?

Sleeper build, get one of them there Polaris 90 Sportsman 2 stroke motors as a base. Then build it from there, that would be a sleeper. Use this as your top end kit. www.partsforscooters.com/169-154-54mm-Minarelli-Big-Bore-KitI've been keeping a watch on Craigslist for a two stroke with a blown motor or non runner cheap. I want to build a sleeper with a Polaris 90cc Minarelli motor. Read through and watched videos doesn't look to bad.

I actually thought about that... but a lot more elbow grease than I intend for with this lil baby, but we'll see.

I'd like to find something like a Ruckus with a 2 stroke. If I can find another scooter cheap enough I might strip it down and see what it looks like.

So I finally got around to tinkering with the scoot again, and popped the CVT cover off to find a loose drive face. The crank doesn't look too good either. I have a short case Minarelli engine from a rental scoot inside, so I pull the variator off to find a 15 spline, like what 90cc engines have. Damn! This one is a 17 spline like normal. Now I gotta buy a variator kit since I don't sell just the face... Had a Gates 780x16.5 belt on it but the other engine had a Bando 788x16.5. You know I'll be using the Bando. I just hope this crank is okay, I don't wanna be splitting cases... but you know if I do I'm gonna be porting and trenching this thing. Again, more elbow grease than I wanted haha

Ouch that crank end doesn't look to good. My Variator fits so tight you have to wiggle the parts off and have patients. Guessing those would fall off. So much for cheap and easy.

Yeah, it took me some prying to get the kickstart gear off, I am going to test-fit a new variator assembly to see how it feels before proceeding with anything. But hey, if it needs a crank I might as well get a stuffer/stroker or something upgraded.

Looks like you need to take a small file to the end first to clean up what is remaining of the splines. Can’t you get a pulley half that has splines built into it? Might help with the pulley side, electric start only, no kick maybe? I think I saw one made by Naraku.

New variator (stock assembly) went on with no issues at all. Splines were good enough to hold everything in place.
I got around to being able to fire it up... but took a LOT of manipulation. First, when removing the carburetor the first time, the vacuum fitting broke off like it wasn't even attached; it just fell off. So, I put epoxy (JB Weld) over the little hole and let sit overnight, then drilled the petcock to allow flow with no vacuum. Found out that the vacuum port is now the fuel port in the petcock, and it flows good. Fuel delivery, check.
I now go to the brakes, rear caliper is zip tied out of the way since the master cylinder AND caliper are shot; I'll just focus on the front for now. Old master pulled, new one on, got pressure in less than a minute. Front brake works GREAT. Next...
Manual choke installed, battery charged, it fired right up. Revved high, got the idle almost perfect after a few minutes with the carb. Sounds nice, purrs like it should and is VERY snappy (more than I thought it would be) with the throttle. Saddle up and take off and it bogs after 50% throttle. I can fluctuate the throttle just a little and drive it, but any hard pull and it just falls flat but then returns to idle if I let off the throttle.
Come home to adjust, pull the needle out and guess what - lose the freakin' clip. Then I turn to grab the spare parts in a little tray (needle, retainer, spring, slide) and end up kicking the tray and sending all the parts into the grass and all I could find was the needle and slide.... damn. Oh well clean up and put everything away...
Find spare parts in my bin the next day that will allow me to reassemble the carb. Fired back up instantly! Took off in my trailer park and it runs outta gas in about 30 feet. Fill her up a little bit and take back off, I can ride for about 15 seconds and it does the rev rev rev up and die. Lean out, I think. I have checked everything I can think of, adjusted this carb up and down and left to right, and it does the same rev up and die like I'm running out of gas. Open the bowl up and sure enough the float is barely moving. like .5mm up and down, not getting fuel. Pull the float and the little wire tab on the float needle breaks clean off. DAMN. All of my other carb floats are too large. I pulled Mikuni carb, pulled the needle seat out of both and swapped them to use the Mikuni float needle. Reassemble everything and the float can't use that needle.
All this chasing around the carb, it just doesn't wanna play. My next step is to get a new carb, nothing fancy until a fancy top end is installed. Then we can let the fun begin. Until then, I just wanna get it running.
