Hey guys! New scooter owner here. hopefully im in the right section. so i got a 2017 Tao scooter yesterday at a goood price there is only 400 miles on it.. im alittle disappointed in the top end.. i wish i could at least get it up to the speed limit.. im lucky to hit 40.. so my question.. what kind of upgrades are people doing to these? i've saw the bore kits, carbs, CDI box.. Any suggestions? or recommendations? Also side question will the 150cc Fit in this frame with minimal work?

How much money you want to spend ?
You can upgrade the power with a big bore kit this usually doesnt add much to top end just gets you there faster .
The cdi may have a restriction in it that is not letting fully rev out most cut out above 7000 rpms . The unrestricted ones let you go to 8.9.10 k rpms . How to check go down a steep hill if your rpms dont rise and your speed barerly increases you are probably restricted .
Your variator could have a wedding band ring on the drive boss that is not leeting the belt get to the top of the variator. You could check this by taking a sharpie marker from the inner to outer edge of the variator and see if you get within a 3 mm of the outer edge if more than 6 mm you have work to do there .

Buy a 150cc if you want one. It is a lot of work to fit one in. Must be a good welder to do it.

The 50cc scoot in stock form is limited by law to about 30MPH except downhill or with a tail wind.
A BBK to about 75cc and tuning work may get you another 10MPH and reduce reliability.
Otherwise sell the 50cc and buy a 150cc. There is no easy conversion from 50cc to 150cc.
I am sure there are many that will disagree with this advice. If you require reliability for work get the 150cc model or even a 250cc.
The 50cc models are for people under 150# and traveling around a few miles where alternative transport is available.

I personally think people have unrealistic expectations of these little 50cc scooters. There fun to play with around town, make good to excellent in town commuters at 30 or 35 mph. Fun to make go a little faster inexpensively or tinker on. For some they are a concession to not having a motorcycle license. If you want to get to 55mph or faster reliably and for any period of time get a larger scooter or motorcycle. My 3.5hp push lawn mower is 148cc.

What I have spent on upgrading my scooter falls in the Dont tell my wife zone . Or I just give her a big pass on whatever she spends at Victorias secret. And make sure she has a top running scoot of her own .
With a 2 stroke upgraded carb ,cvt ,gears ,pipe and 70 cc kit . I can hang with the stock 125 4 strokes for top speed and takeoff. It is a fun but expensive hobby . I did nothing for resale for all the mods . And with what I have spent for all the upgrades I could have bought a yamaha zuma 125 cc for less .
I looked at upgrading a 4 stroke you just dont get as much bang for the buck .
