Hi, I’m looking to purchase my first scooter and am trying to decide between the NIU or the Piaggio. Any suggestions? I don’t live near the NIU dealer so I’m worried that if something went wrong with it, it would be a problem to get serviced. Any opinions on which is more reliable? Lasts longer? Easier to maintain? I’d appreciate any insight as I know very little about either and it’s hard to find trustworthy info. Thanks!

Location . . speed expectations . . use context?
Why not select the Piaggio Liberty 150 that would be more compatible with typical metro traffic?

I’m only looking to use it for work and quick errands, maybe 10-15 miles a day tops, mostly on smaller roads around town. I’d like to stay around the 30-35mph range, just trying to ease my way into riding and don’t really need something that goes 60mph.

I agree with Tortoise the Liberty 150 is the way to go. But based on what you currently think you'll be doing on your scooter the 50cc would be okay. Between the 2 it's apples to oranges. One is electric and the other a fuel injected scooter with 3 valves. I saw a Robot video on Scooterwests Youtube channel last night about a Malossi CDI upgrade that will wake the 50cc scooter up. But that might get you 45mph. I have several scooters of differnt sizes and states of tune to do what I want that day. I will generally take the 150 when I'm just not sure what the day will bring. Don't worry about the larger engine the 150 only weighs about 25lbs. more and it looks like they are built on the same frame. The 150 is about 500 more but you might find a deal. Keep us posted on what you decide.

For my money I would get the Piaggio. There is less to go wrong with electric, but who is going to fix it? The 50cc will be so good on fuel. You would have to do so many miles to break even. Like pinkscoot said the 150 will not be much heavier than the 50cc. Piaggio tend to use the same frame on multiple engines. My 50cc typhoon weighs a ton. Because it's designed as a 125cc model.

Been excited about the NIU since I discovered it last Christmas. It would be an edition to the LX, because I can keep it in the house and stay in line with fire codes, and prevent theft.
My 2 concerns were Insurance, and service. The nearest dealer is in Atlanta about 4 hours from me. Don't think our friendly local bike or scooter shop can help. Understand it is being distributed by Genuine.
Heard nightmare story about someone in UK getting insurance. The rates are high there maybe, because electric is so new. I'd think rates would be lower.
I'd like to register it as a moped, but my state is still in confusion about how to register what over new laws for gas scoots.
