Hello all, need some advice. I have a 2002 2T bugeye that has the following: Malossi overrange kit with variator, yellow contra spring, blue clutch springs on stock clutch, 11g roller weights. The bug is otherwise all stock, no exhaust or carb work. I have full travel on the variator. This bug goes 52 mph and I don’t want to lose that. My issue is the acceleration. It’s slow starting off, so much that I have to wait for a large break in traffic before I pull out. What can I change to achieve faster acceleration without loosing top end speed? I did try reducing roller weights down to 7.5g but lost a lot of top end. I bought the scooter this way, so I’m just trying to fine tune it to my needs. It runs great. Thank you in advance!

Those weights seem very heavy. You must be taking ages to get into the power band. What exhaust are you running? Stock pipes usually make power from about 6,000 RPM. And aftermarket performance pipes are 8,000 upwards. What revs are you at when the clutch engages, and with those rollers?

This also sounds like one of those situations where you want to visually check and make sure the clutch is engaging before the CVT starts upshifting.

I have stock exhaust, stock everything except the overrange kit. I tried lesser weight but lost a lot of top end speed. Do I need to shim variator out maybe? What would happen if I changed to a white spring from yellow? I believe that’s 1000 vs 1500?

It’s super smooth from dead start to top end, just lacking balls for initial takeoff.

If everything is stock, you do not need such a stiff spring.

Okay I have a Malossi white spring ….what size weights then you think?

11 gram weights I have never heard anyone running that heavy on a 50 cc zuma .
Try the 7.5 weights with the white spring You could go up a notch stiffer on clutch springs so your engine is spinning faster before the clutch engages .
You are asking alot of the stock motor to push the higher gear ratios of the overrrange

Thank you, I’m going to try this. I was surprised by the 11g also, but when I reduced weight I lost a lot of top end, so I put them back in. I’ll update with the results.

From the stuff you described, I actually kind of doubt you have an actual overrange set up, or at least a complete one. The overrange kits don't typically come with a yellow spring, and it doesn't typically use 11 1/2 g weights. On top of that, who would spend 300 something dollars on a kit just to use the stock clutch with blue springs? Sometimes, people will try to build their own over range setup with limited success. This may have been what the previous owner of your bike did. you may need to overhaul your entire CVT system; I'm assuming you have mismatched parts which is why you need such heavy rollers to extend the sheave enough to travel at 50 mph. The cvt is pretty easy to work on, I would pull it apart completely and post pics of what's installed. We can help you figure out what's up.
Also, have you looked at the belt condition? I change mine 1-2 times a year if riding regularly on a malossi overrange.

The CVT is a definite balancing act. Change one thing at a time and take notes on the results. Watching Brent’s videos he makes paper notes of every change he makes. Experience will guide you after awhile but before that it’s gonna be tedious.
I’m at the tedious mistake making stage.

I am with the guys above. Something not seem right Kimosabi. (That is Tonto from The Lone Ranger)
If you could list each component with a picture, we all could drive you crazier. If your CVT is someones "hybrid", we would likely see that. Easier to keep your pocket change next to your twins.
Quite often, folks get the belt wrong. Yes, size matters. Not the girth as much as the length....but we have seen some combo's that are right for a particular set of bells and quite poop on an OEM set. Likewise, the opposite.
FYI...for my own tuning, I do as many engine mods and quality checks as I can...BEFORE attempting a CVT setup. Often hard to do, but bears riper fruit.
Kind of like this: *** tune your engine (cleaning internals, Ignition setup, AFR-carb setup to that ONE pipe) *** test and repeat until some WOW grins happen. *** test again and note any good or bad CVT performance. *** change/tune only CVT settings, one at a time. *** Apply, lather, rinse...repeat.
In other words...spend more time and less money...if not satisfied, spend more money...and more time to get it right....then more money and again and again. Overall, you will learn by our mistakes, have a fun scooter and have pocket pool efficiency.

My scoot has a true overrange kit, 100% Malossi, circa 2003. The old Malossi belt I removed has a part # that isn’t made anymore. I verified my rear pulley & variator Malossi part numbers and yep, it was a complete kit back in the day…it took some digging on the European Malossi site, but I was able to verify what exactly was installed.
I removed the stock exhaust pipe cleaned it out and did the same with carb. I’ll look into the ignition though.
The new belt I bought fits perfectly up on the rear pulley and when I tested the vario travel, I have about 1/8” of black marker left, so I think that part of the puzzle is okay. This scoot has 44,000 miles and was used for flat highway use. The slower take off worked for prior owner but I need a little more. I’m going to try the white spring and less weights. Thanks for everyone’s input, I value everyone’s suggestions and input!

44,000 or 4,400.0?
