So you're looking for how to seal the base when not using gaskets? I use the same stuff that I use when putting cases together in that instance (ThreeBond). For coating base gaskets, I tend to use Permatex Ultra Grey very thin. The Permatex is easier to apply and cleanup, but I think ThreeBond is a bit better if sealing is an issue.
If nothing wants to seal, try to check surfaces for true. Hold a straight edge against the cylinder base and the cases. See if light gets through. Could be something like a minor mismatch where the cases meet and with no base gasket to take up the slack, it's tough to seal.
If you're talking about at the head, I generally prefer machining the head if it's just a small change in squish that I'm after. With o-ring heads, you shouldn't go too far with changes unless you're also going to cut the groove deeper. Gasketed heads are easier to play with.
Not sure why it needs to be pulled apart and cleaned up a bunch. You should be able to check without sealant. The sealant is gonna squish out and shouldn't make much difference in clearance and if there's no gasket then it shouldn't really settle.

Yes I have a 132cc aerix air cooled, not a gasket on it, and have never had any trouble even doing head gasket, but I use the ultra copper for head same brand, I have started to use the black threadbond it is good, my problem is I have the right gaskets to get perfect squash, but I went to do a leak down test and my regulator was stuck on 20psi so when I did test, that's way to much psi,I know 5-7psi is what I normal do, so leaking around base gaskets at 20psi, I don't know if it would on any motor but I think seals are good, so im waiting on tarque spaners to do again, and only smear selant this time, I used a spray inbetween the 2 gaskets, and selent on mating surfaces, im hope, when I clean it all up and reinstall with right tools, it will be fine, thanks for your help
