Tao Tao 50, big bore kit, 20mm carb. Been running great. Then at a stoplight it won’t idle and cuts off. Luckily made it back to the house. Went through the usual suspects. Valve adj, spark check, coil looks good, so pulled carb and cleaned. When all together fired up but rear wheel at a pretty good clip on the center stand. Backed off the throttle screw till the wheel moving slow. On full throttle accelerated slowly chugging, on throttle release cut out so back to square one. The only thing untested cdi. Could that be it? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks

If the engine kind of 'bumbled stuttered and finally quit' my suspect would be carb. A CDI generally will fall on its face wham. done. no spark==no run, right now. If you were able to ride back home, with normal speed, etc, my bet narrows down to the idle jet and passages in the carb. If you installed the throttle cable as it had been in the past AND did not mess around with the hard idle stop(butterfly screw), the idle should have been right on, without any 'runaway' sort of performance... i would inspect the throttle cable routing and adjustment... for the high idle but you seem to have got past that. I would suspect fuel delivery if it cannot maintain higher rpms with the throttle opened.(on the center stand) The float could be sticking closed, or the 'hinge pin' it pivots on could have jammed the float L/R against the boss when the pin was installed... needle sticking, etc. If you took the diaphragm off the top, did you align the little tab? Did the slide go into place w/o any fiddling? Are you sure the needle went into the main fuel outlet at the bottom of the venturi? A binding slide could/would choke off higher rpm performance. You should be able to diddle the slide from the aircleaner side, push it up and let it drop, while watching what the needle did... The needle could be moving from its normal spot if it didn't go right into place, look to see that it moved in/out properly. Last thought... check fuel flow. At the carb fuel inlet. Often overlooked as is it not visible is the fuel tank outlet plastic pipe/screen that is a rough filter for grass, etc. It can get clogged over time and restrict flow. You may be able to see it if the tank is empty. tom
