Did you check the piston? To me you fried it. You could check to see if the engine is sucking in too much air.

No visible damage or holes on visual inspection when I pulled the head earlier

Most of my hard start issues were from low compression- it would eventually start but usually kill the batt first.. no compression gauge? My head nuts kept vibrating loose..

FINALLY got my paws on a compression tester. Yes, the scoot is still sitting around collecting dust. I'm only getting about 60psi (average) on my compression tests. Not sure what 'normal' should be, but I would think about double (120) what I show now. So, now the question is- just yank the thing and do a full rebuild with all new gaskets, seals, rings, bearings, etc- Try to find a cheap 1E40QMB locally to swap into it (and worry about swapping the BBK over later)- Sell it as-is and save a few bucks up to get something else (2T of course!) Or, _______ ?? Any and all help & advice is GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

Compression needs to be at least 90 psi (or so) to start-and run (barely) 120-140 would be good. Might not be that bad. Is the head gasket copper? I have successfully reused mine over and over by annealing it. (heating it up with a torch until it becomes very soft again). There's good youtube vids on this subject. If the rings aren't wasted and cylinder passes visual inspection it may just be a simple head gasket leak...

Did you have the carb wide open when testing compression?
