Put a black mark across the variator from inside to outside and run it up to speed. Then see how much black mark is left on the outer edge. If there's next to nothing left you either have a tiny variator (not likely) or it's doing pretty well and you are in need of a gear change or possibly heavier rollers or a softer contra may help. If there's a lot of marker left, you definitely need to work with the CVT before deciding on gears.

Ryan did a full stage 6 build on a 02 Zuma with stock crank. 35mph gps at about 12k rpm was it no matter what he did a gear change turned it into a 55 mph bike at a safe rpm. I'm not saying that a variator and bbk and stuff like that is a waste it is just not wise money at this point. My 08 with 13.25 gears gps 42 to 44 mph and that is gear limited also. With a better variator I could do a little better but a variator won't overcome the gears he is fighting. His should match mine or better with a gear change to 11:1 and then when he gets a bbk etc he had the gears to use the power. He is lucky the stock reeds in the yamaha don't like to Rev or he would go faster and wipe out the crank. I'm a fat ass at 210 lbs and the 13.25 gears in my Zuma and the 13.54 gears in the Eton are to deep. I've bought gears for every motor I have to get between 9.25:1 and 11:1 be it 50cc or 103cc. $100 dollars worth of gears will gain him 15 mph how is that bad money. On his current setup no other mod will gain that return for that little

a tiny variator has nothing to do with it. it makes a ramp for the v-belt to go on.
