I just installed a big valve head with new gaskets but i want to check for oil leaks and i hate having to take the shroud off and on to keep checking. will it be okay if i take it out for like a 1-2 mile ride without the shroud just to check for leaks? or will the heat cause harm in that short of a ride? thanks.

the oil will leak past the shroud, you will see it. i wouldn't run it without one.

I ran it for about a half mile at WOT once it was warmed up, no leaks and no sign of damage. shroud is now back on.

That was taking a chance but glad you did not burn it up, you do a compression check before the run and after to see if it's the same

I ran it for about a half mile at WOT once it was warmed up, no leaks and no sign of damage. shroud is now back on. Short time periods with air blowing over the engine never hurt any of mine. Don't sit in traffic or let it idle for extended periods of time. It'll be fine. I see you already did it.
