I recently replaced the carburetor and fuel valve on my scooter. It worked alright for a while but I tried to change the needle position because the spark plug looked lean. I didn't notice much difference after moving the needle so I thought maybe it was getting too much air. I placed some foam in the air box to restrict the flow a little. This made it run too rich so I removed the foam. Now the scooter won't run. It seems like the carburetor is getting fuel but the fuel doesn't seem to be making it into the cylinder. When I dump gas directly into the top of the carb, the motor will run great until that gas burns up. When I open the drain on the bottom of the carb, gas comes out. Vacuum lines are working and it has a full tank of gas. I checked the intake to make sure nothing is blocking it. Is there anything that would prevent gas from going into the cylinder? I would really appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestion. I took the carb apart and checked the jets. None of them appeared to be clogged but I cleaned everything out and put it back together. Now it won't start at all. I tried dumping gas into the top of the carb again. Also tried starting fluid. It definitely has a spark but is not even trying to start. The plug looks clean every time I take it out. Not sure what would cause this? Is it possible that the timing is off?

Did you check the float height? Could be getting some fuel in the bowl, but not enough. You say you're dumping fuel into the top of the carb. You mean the inlet or are you taking the top cap off and dumping fuel in? Is the plug clean and dry now or clean and wet?

That seemed to work before but not now. The plug is dry and clean. I'm not sure what could have changed because the scooter seemed to be running ok before I adjusted the needle and placed the foam in the air box. I moved the needle back to the original position and removed the foam but it still won't run. Thanks for any help!

Put the slide/diaphragm and cap on before you try starting it anymore. I'd spray carb cleaner or starting fluid into the inlet with the throttle open or maybe see if you could get a small amount of gas in that way. Sometimes it's as simple as holding your hand over the mouth of the carb and it will create a strong vacuum, pick up fuel, and be off and running.

you said you pulled the carb apart. there is a brass ring in the carb that the main jet sits in when the diaphram and needle are in. It can fall out without you knowing it and not allowing the fuel to siphen up properly.
