For starters my scooter is a TaoTao Powermax 150 aka the VIP... I've been searching for months trying to figure out the cheapest way to calibrate my stock speedometer to be correct. I finally decided to mount a cell phone w/ GPS speed app and figure out where the numbers were at. I then went to take apart my speedometer, but I broke the needle... Because somebody superglued it together... So I needed to buy a new one. On Amazon, I found one that looked to be correct for where I was going to calibrate the correct MPH to be at! So I purchased the unit from Amazon to see what I would get. After receiving it I've come to the conclusion that there is a large misprint going on in the speedos from China! I believe the Taiwanese units are correct! But here, have a look and make your own conclusion! I have found these speedometers on almost all TaoTao (VIP) models and the speedos are just so awfully wrong! I wish I could inform more people of this bad misprint that has happened!

They are not awfully wrong, they are just very optimistic.

About 99% of folks are already aware of this...and that is why we use a GPS to check true speed. The only speedo's I have EVER seen on a Chinese or Taiwanese Scooter there were actually accurate..were the ones on my Jonway Wasp and my Adly Thunderbike. All the rest are as much as 20mph off once ya get above 25mph. That is why folks that really believe they are accurate tell us they are hitting 50 mph..when in reality it is off by 20mph and they are going 30 or so..

I just went out and racked up about 20 miles with the new speedo, I don't think its accurate now. Next ride I'm charging the GPS speedo up to determine where its truly at.

Most of these China speedo's seem to be off (yes, waayy optimistic!) in such a way as they get progressively worse. It's only off by 5mph at 20mph.. off by 10mph at 30mph.. and off even more at higher speeds etc... so trying to "dial in" a stock Chinese speedo may be a futile effort. If you figure it out let us know!

I have the Pilot (the CARB legal Powermax/VIP). My speedo is 10% off. Minimal amounts at lower speeds but noticeable about 30-40mph. I have been thinking of ripping out the whole cluster and replacing it with one of those universal units like the TrailTech Endurance. Anyone have any experience with one of those?

Just mark the faceplate with a marker or engraving tool and live with it. By law all speedometers must read fast both for scoots and cars etc. The manufacturer's don't put much work into making sure scoot speedos are anywhere close to right as long as they read faster than actual speed.
