Hey all. What is the skinny behind the term "no rev limiter" on a CDI? Or why do stock CDI's seem to limit my revs? Thanks!

Some stock CDIs are limited to a certain RPM to keep 49cc scooters doing the low speeds they are intended to do. Not all scooters have a CDI that limits engine RPM. That's one big mistake that a lot of people make with aftermarket CDIs. If their scooter doesn't go X speed, they think it must be rev limited. The best way to know if your scooter has a rev limiter is to use a tachometer to see what your max engine RPM is. Another giveaway might be that your scooter revs to a certain point and it sounds like it's breaking up and won't rev higher no matter what you do.
A no rev limit CDI is just what the name implies. It will let your engine rev as high as it can.

Ah. Thanks! I'm going to change mine out, just because I am having a 'replacement part' party in my backyard tomorrow. Trying still to get my scoot to par. I've decided to name it. 'Lucky' Ah, the sweet smell of sarcasm.

The rev limited ones tend to have a pink wire and you just have to cut that wire to remove the limiter.

Generally a cdi with six wires is limited and in my case the wire was brown. That's just the case with mine and doesn't mean it applies to all scooters. Restrictions come in all sorts of interesting ways; small main jets, airbox constrictors, variator to name a few.
