I'm getting air in my fuel line. Is that an indicator that I have a bad fuel bowl gasket or is it something else?

Bubbles usually indicate air leak , crappy fuelines , filter etc. Are most common.

Possibly less than ideal routing. If it's not a very steady decline from tank to carb it's normal to see a little air in the high spots.

Agreed. My VX has a crappy path for the fuel line which I'm going to re-route with the new carb, I'm forever working the air out of the line and back into the tank when I tinker with it. Also make sure your clamps are all tight. You may not see gas leaking out, but air is thinner than gas (surprisingly...) and will find its way in. Especially the less dense air of the higher altitudes.
If you see the bubbles coming from the carb and you're sure the clamp around the carb inlet is secure, then you can suspect the carb for sure. Otherwise, just buy some 1/4 worm style hose clamps and don't wrench em too hard.
