Great site ! I am new to scooting and just bought a tao tao gt50. Of course like alot of other people I want to pump up the perfromance. Reno is very hilly so i need to make some adjustments for that and since my local routes are going to be on major roads I am going to need some better accelation and top speed. Where should I start ? Thanks again - I am really glad I found this site.

You may be able to get a little more out of it from carb and CVT tuning. Maybe even try a free ignition mod. More info below. www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5j8gHg5kMcwww.youtube.com/watch?v=p63JXW29tVoBeyond that I'm a fan of big bore kits (BBKs). They don't always get you lots of top speed because some scoots are geared pretty low, but they add lots more torque. If you go that route, stick with a 72cc kit (47mm bore). The larger kits put more stress on the crank. Remember that you will need to re-tune the carb and likely the CVT after a BBK is installed.

Thank you. That was going to be my next question on the bbk. Where is the fine line before you start pounding the bottom end. What about installing a bigger carb ? And any mods to the stock exhaust needed. My average altitude is about 4500 feet above sea level.

Most stock carbs can handle stock or big bored engines fine. Being at that elevation you may need smaller jets than stock... depends what it has. You'll still need a larger jet for a big bore kit than a stock engine though.
Stock exhaust is probably alright. They vary. Some open them up by drilling or replace them altogether, but if the exhaust is functioning alright as-is I'm not sure that you'll see big gains.

Did you replace the exhaust on yours ? No I modified it to breathe better though. With temperature change as drastic as they are in the Truckee Meadows. Up here you're gonna have to find a medium depending on season. Ijust up jetted mine cause of that cold spell. Now its in the 50's and it's not running to good or good enough.
