I was looking for a picture today and came across this one of an alternative method for starting a 139QMB with the belt cover removed. From the watermark I believe it was Brent that came up with this one. It sure looks cheap and easy to make and those are two qualities I really admire.

Whatever works for each individual is the right way to do it. I've started scooters with my thumb on the Bendix before.

Me too. I also slipped and got my thumb with the fixed half's teeth before. Once it's started you have to hold it up. I think the tools and methods posted before are all cheaper and easier than thumb replacement.

I have too much respect for rotating machinery to use my thumb or a finger. Machinery is unforgiving. On the other hand using the wire method could allow the bendix to jump upwards and get in a bind with the gear teeth. Something that could ruin a bendix or variator sprocket.
I also made my bendix easier to get in and out with the variator in place by breaking off a small corner of that aluminum case around the bendix. It allows just enough clearance to slip it out easily.
I will always wonder whether starting my scoot with an electric drill contributed to the variator failure I had. I had a steel variator with bad splines that folded over but the variator nut also came loose under heavy braking. I am using a torque stick and blue loctite on my variator nut nowadays. I don't intend to ever use a heavy duty electric drill to start my scoot again without removing the nut and re-torquing afterwards.
Finding good metric bolts is still a problem. I found some 10.9 hex head bolts in Home Depot supposedly made in Taiwan. Those Chinese 8.8 bolts seem to be made of pot metal.

I finished my tool today by stamping it with a lettering set. Maybe it will remind me what it is for before I use it for something else. I have a tendency to use whatever metal scrap is available for projects. My letter stamp work was not nearly as neat as this computer print.

Fan-tastic! Can I buy one?
If not, could I design one like that in a CAD system and have someone with a milling machine make it for me? I do a good bit of 3D CAD modeling.
A milling machine is on my "Want" list. I've looked at some. A reasonably good one for hobby use starts at about $3K I believe.
Not sure about the 3 axis

Awesome! There's nothing like having awesome tools the skills to use them and the imagination to do it.

Another alternative is to do what a poster here has done. (I think it was peascreek?) He took an old cvt cover and cut off all except three bolt holes that surround the bushing for the bendix. So he ended up with a small cover that holds the bendix but does nothing else.

Very well designed and executed Sir. Very beefy too and, I would bet, a lot stronger than the original cover in that area. You could sell those easily. Bill

if I were to ever use a drill to start a scoot I would want to do it from the flywheel side not the variator dide so you are tightening not loosening the nut.

makes me wish my pulley weren't supported by bearings in my cvt cover on the piaggio. or wish it was affordable to have a shop make me something like that that would support the two shafts and the starter.

Jeff84, Post a picture of the inside of the cover you have, maybe something can be done to help in your situation.
