hey everyone. i'm looking around for a new combination lock (no key) to use with my big steel cable to lock up my scooter. with a surfboard in tow, etc, going swimming, i'm looking for something that (1) doesn't require a key, and (2) is secure. i am looking at this one: here is their info on it: www.masterlock.com/personal-use/product/178Dand on amazon: www.amazon.com/Master-Lock-178D-Set-Your-Own-Combination/dp/B0009V1WMA with a bunch of good reviews. has anyone used any of these type, or this one, and if so, are they pretty secure? i know the old locker style padlocks take a shim cut from a soda can and about 2 seconds to pop open, so that has me concerned about how secure these may be. its got 4 number tumblers, programmable unlock code.

Master usually makes good locks imo. Cool that you can choose your own combination on that one. just dont do like on Spaceballs & use 1234 for a combination. Lol.

I have used one for years, and they are good locks. But like most locks, they are no match for the average bolt cutter.
Always remember to scramble the numbers right after opening so no one will see your combo.

If you look on Youtube it takes about 3 seconds to unlock one. They still use the shim trick, just at another point.

"The pursuit of lock picking is as old as the lock, which is itself as old as civilization. But in the entire history of the world, there was only one brief moment, lasting about 70 years, where you could put something under lock and key—a chest, a safe, your home—and have complete, unwavering certainty that no intruder could get to it. This is a feeling that security experts call “perfect security.” Since we lost perfect security in the 1850s, it has has remained elusive. Despite tremendous leaps forward in security technology, we have never been able to get perfect security back. Locks go back at least as far as ancient Egypt (though perhaps originating in ancient Mesopotamia)." gizmodo.com/in-1851-a-man-picked-two-unpickable-locks-and-changed-1698557792

This lock has a key but you can always wear the key on a string around your neck: www.amazon.com/SOBO-SPPO60-KD-Shrouded-Security-Different/dp/B006Y3J83CEDIT: The lock can be purchased keyed alike or different. I have no idea what that means. Maybe keyed alike means the same as an existing lock you own??? A lock like this would be my choice and then careful consideration would have to be given to the chain. I would use a cable threaded through the chain just for extra difficulty. One of those battery operated diamond abrasive disks will cut through anything. It is just slow work and maybe someone would notice.
