VIN has been sanded-off, you say? Off a frame member? Not as part of prep work for repainting or anything? No separate manufacturer's plate riveted or glued-on anyplace?
What is this poor undocumented orphan's provenance - how did it come to you?
Outside a local 7-11, a youth once offered me a little flat-black 2 stroke with a screwdriver sticking out of the key slot for $200. I dunno; something didn't feel right...

I think what goes around comes around. Anyone who buys a stolen scooter and knows it will probably have similar luck.
Karma. But does everyone who steals a scooter or buys one knowing it was stolen end up having something bad happen to them? I dunno.

oh man. I bought it at a yard sale. I knew something wasen't right, but for 40 bucks, I saw it as opportunity to learn the inside of a scooter. I believe in karma too... I clean up bottles thrown onto my favorite mountain bike trails.

lol, I was gonna say the same thing when i read the thread.... heh also, someone schmart told me that one could just call their police department and ask the desk sergeant to check on the VIN while you wait patiently. edit: ooop, Brent beat me to it. Yes, call the police department (NON-emergency number).

All that website does is to check a database to see if it was reported as stolen. What if I wanted to check the VIN to see if it was correct for the scooter I think I have? (ie: I wanted to make sure that what I'm seeing on the VIN tag is for my make and model?) Nevermind, found this place for a quick check: www.whomademybike.com/

Did the other person willfully give it to you, or did you just take it ? Sorry, its been one of those days.

You can just call your local police department. The local number, not the emergency number. Just tell em your buying a scooter and want to make sure it's not stolen, and read them the vin number. I've done a couple times.

If you find a vehicle without a VIN plate or the VIN plate has been defaced or altered in any manner, -or- the VIN stamp on the frame has been defaced, walk away. The vehicle is stolen. Report the vehicle location to the police at your first opportunity. Someone may be looking for it. We all need to do our bit to reduce crime.
Any legit vehicle owner should have the title and/or paperwork for any vehicle they own. If the owner has lost the title they should follow the DMV process required to get a new one.
