I was looking at Brent's T-2 thread and when I saw he was tracing gaskets I was wondering if he uses a regular hole punch on them like I have been doing forever. A regular notebook paper single hole punch works fine but it's small so on most holes it takes a few bites to make the holes large enough to work. Anyway, I looked around online for gasket making tools and I stumbled on these sets of hole punches and it seemed to me that one of these sets would be a very nice addition to anybody's tool box. I'm sure they can be obtained at an arts and crafts stores too. www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H1.TRS0&_nkw=HOLE+PUNCH+SET&_sacat=0

I found that the different sized hollow sections from a steel collapsible radio antenna mounted in a drill press are the bomb for making holes in gasket material.
I had a cheap set of round leather punches that I used for a while they work ok with a hammer, then I chucked them up in the drill press and they worked even better. I started using the antenna sections because the sizes matched up way better than the punch set.

You guys are crazy...specialty tools or xcacto knives and time?! Get a ball peen hammer(anyone with a tool box has one). Lay your cut out gasket over the surface it will seal, properly oriented obviously. Press the rounded end of the ball peen into the center of each bolt hole and press down, twist back and fourth a few times. That should be it, perfectly sized and located hole in seconds.

So lemme see if I understand you... I'm tracing out a gasket and I'm gonna skip the part where I trace the holes and then after I cut out the gasket I'm gonna place it on the engine or whatever and hold it in place with one hand and press a hammer into it with a chance that it could slip and tear if it's a thin gasket and that's gonna make a perfect hole? Would the hole piece end up inside the case for me to pick out with a dental tool or what? What's the hurry? If I have to trace out a gasket and cut it out anyway I can go ahead and trace the location and size of the holes and if I have a punch set and a hammer sitting within arm's reach how long can that take? Tell you what: If I ever go back into the scooter repair business and need to make a lot of gaskets, I will buy a set of punches and hit them with a ball peen hammer.

I have been using a hole punch for paper. Works fine for up to about 6mm fasteners. I used to have a punch around here for leather. Kinda like a giant hole punch, but it had a head that rotated around with multiple sizes. I have looked for it and cannot find it.
