You could do the trip on a 50cc, but if you obey all local laws you would have a long trip. I'm sure MD is not the only place that won't allow a scoot on a 55MPH+ highway, so there would be a lot of planning to get places without hitting those roads.
If you are looking for more of a trip than an adventure, I'd say 250cc is about the minimum. You need something capable of 70MPH to keep up with traffic to some degree on highways. I know a lot of bikers that would tell you 600cc at minimum. Those folks wouldn't dare set foot on a 50cc period though. If you ride a 50, you should be kinda used to a bit of compromise. I don't think a 250 would bug most scooterists too much. Then again, if you could find a deal on a bigger cc bike or scoot used, it wouldn't be a bad thing.
I think, no matter what cc, if you are making a cross country trip you either need to have a AAA membership and/or plenty of spare funds available just incase or you need to carry tools and some spare parts and be prepared to wrench if necessary. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. I'm guilty of riding without proper tools a lot, but I can call someone to get me. You probably won't get halfway across the country and call your buddy with a pickup. lol
One bad thing about sportbikes in general for cross country trips, you will probably be able to ride less (or at least be comfortable for less time) than if you were on a scoot or cruiser because of riding position.

You could probably get a lightly used Ninja for the same price. When you need parts they are everywhere.
The hyosung is a great looking bike but dealers and parts are going to be rare cross country.
Let us know how it goes.

I am on a Honda Rebel forum and there are a bunch of those members that have done long trips on their 250cc rebels. Problem is with them not so much power to do the trip but comfort. They are just not great for the average American to ride long distances, storage is an issue too. As far as comfort goes I think that a cruiser is not as comfortable as a standard motorcycle.
By the way, you can pick up one of the 250cc class scooters. One of the CFMoto Fashions is probably very comfortable.

I'm planning a near-3000 mile trip to Florida in summer, on a Ninja 250. You can probably pick one up on craigslist for $1000 to $1500 in decent condition. Might need a few general maintenance things done, but everything does when you buy used. I'd recommend that over a scooter or a Hyosung. Like WT100 said, it does look nice, but it's probably expensive, and you won't be able to find parts for it. You can pretty much go on ebay and search "Ninja 250" and find enough parts to make 50 Ninja's from scratch.
