My son has been tinkering with these lil X-mod cars and trucks. He bought one at Radio Shack last week and he really enjoys em. I was looking at some vids with him and we came across this one. I figured some of you would get a kick outta this. After seeing that little sucker i feel kinda 'in the dark ages' without a scooter dyno . I dont think it measures Hourse or Mouse power but its still neat..... Shoot! I hope the R/C police dont start pulling us over and getting these outta the trunk :stars:

That is cool. Someone definitely needs to make affordable scooter dynamometers. I remember when those things first came out years ago. A friend of mine's house used to be a hangout for a large group of car nuts. Basically any Sat or Sun that he wasn't going to the track, he hung around the house and a bunch of us would stop by. BS about cars, see who showed up, and get a little racing in down the road a bit. Then these X-Mods came out. Next thing I know, all these grown men are now bringing their X-Mods to race across the kitchen floor instead of taking out their Mustangs or whatever they had. lol Even better, I know some of these folks think messing with scoots isn't so great. Oh, but I remember your X-Mods.

lol, funny how the littlest thing you would never really expect will get you all excited and ready to TUNE! My son got a pretty good deal on his..Gave $25 for the Nissan370 kit. He likes it! I was pretty impressed with it right outta the box...Well, outta the box, then assembled lol.

A dyno is not that hard to build. When I was in Mech. Engineering school I remember seeing a Prony brake dyno that some students built and left with the school. As I recall it used some sort of band brake and the lever arm bore on the platform of a set of beam scales. The braked drum ran in a shallow water bath to limit heating.
Here's a couple of vids on a homebuilt one. The guy takes forever to explain it and finally gets around to demonstrating it in the second vid. It's a little too primitive and gimpy for my tastes but demonstrates the principle well.
Here's a home brewed one testing a small 2t bike.

I looked into building a dyno some time ago, but anything that looked good to me was involved enough that I'd be better off saving for a real one from the way it looked. Maybe someday.
