Remember the good old days when you wanted to play a video game? You either stuck a cartridge or a disk in your game system and you played your game. Well assuming your disk was clean and not scratched, and your laser lens wasn't out of whack. Or if you didn't have tap, blow on or wiggle the cartridge to make it work. But for the most part you just popped your game in and played it. Oh and you could cheat on just about any game. You know in case you were old and pretty much suck at video games and needed help not ending up dead in the first 4 minutes of play. Or you already know how to drive and don't want to spend 2 weeks passing tests to get a license.
Unfortunately I am old enough to remember when games consisted of a toy cap gun or a stick. Video games and computers were not even something you could imagine. A computer was this huge machine that had tape reels and punch cards and only the military had one. I am lucky enough to have played all the greats. Good old pong, the original atari, the atari 5200, intelevision, apple, commador, amiga an everything inbetween. Then things got cool with the sega genisis, nintendo and finally the ps1 and 2 and the xbox.
Oh but not now, now we have the ps3/ps4, Xbox 350/ONE and other things. Well actually the Wii isn't bad for plug and play, you can pretty much put the disk in and play. Unfortunately if you don't want to bowl or play golf the games pretty much suck lol.
A few years ago I broke up with my girlfriend of 10 years, she had kids so I left my PS2 and tv for them. Sweet of me huh. A year goes by I start thinking I want another video game console. I figure the ps3 is getting long in the tooth, I can probably snag one up cheap and see what all the fuss is about. I don't remember how much they were new, but I know what I paid for a used one at gamestop wasn't what I would call a bargain. But I won some money at the casino in detriot and figured hell, its not my money I can treat myself. Like an idiot I did it on an impulse ( on the way home from the casino lol) and didn't bother doing any research, I just figured they were like the ps2 but better graphics. I tell the guy in the store I really don't do a lot of gaming, I don't play online and I really just like simulators like racing and flying. He says well just get the 12gig with flash memory if you won't be putting a lot of games on it. So that is what I get, and a copy of gt6.
I get it home and spend a few hours hooking it up and updating all the software. Only to find out it doesn't have enough memory to even play GT6!!! WTF. I just spent like 250 bucks for a fancy blu ray player and a game I can't play. Which I didn't need because I already have a blu ray player. And it only cost like 100 and it came with a damn remote, which the ps3 didn't.
The next morning I call Gamestop and ask them what the hell is going on and why doesn't this thing work? This guy tells me "oh the Slim is pretty much just a glorified blu ray player that can play games, it needs a hard drive to be of any use for gaming.". Well luckily I have an extra 40gig ssd laying about that I can pop in there. More time installing software and updating stuff again. Finally I can play my gt6. Um ya right. More hours on end of installing and downloading and updating just to be able to play the damn game. Really? Finally.....finally I can play the game. Turns out it isn't all that much more impressive that the ps2 games were. Sure it looks a little cleaner, but nothing mind blowing. And I can't hack the licenses, come on man, again really? I have been playing this game since it came out in the 90's and I have to waste the time getting licenses and doing challenges again. What a let down.
I said screw it and took the game back and got some different ones. Mortal Kombat, MW3, and the Mass Effect trilogy. Seriously, I am not joking or exaggerating, it took me almost a whole day (24 hours) to install and update these games. And then the hard drive was pretty much full, 40 gigs!!!!! However I will give credit where it is due, these games were much better. Mortal Kombat Complete is just SICK. I played it straight through for hours on end. Mass Effect is awesome, I am on at least my third time going through the trilogy. And the cool thing is it ends different each time if you make different choices. MW3 is cool, but I suck at it. I wish there was a way I could hack it so I couldn't die lol. Oh and I ended up dropping a 1tb hard drive in it. Which of course meant a few days of downloads, updates and installs again.
So today I am goofing around and see GT5 for 4 bucks, 4 bucks man, I gotta have this. So now you have to read my long ass post while I am waiting for the game to install.
I will admit though, it is a really good blu ray and media player. And I use the youtube feature quite a bit. But man, who in their right mind wants to buy a video game and wait over an hour to play it? What were these people thinking?
Anyone know where I can pick up a pong console and 13 inch black and white tv?
