Ok guys, I have a 2014 Taotao. Installed a 80cc bore kit and it runs great. New problem. I am now hearing squeaking and grinding coming from seems like the transmission. I replaced the belt and inspected the variator and replaced the sliders. Clutch pads look a little worn so will replace the clutch also. Would the clutch cause the noise im hearing? When i start the scooter it starts squeaking. When im riding it sounds like scraping and or grinding and squeaking. Also the back plate on the clutch is warped a little.

It does it when sitting, as in not driving the rear tire? It sounds like a bearing, but if does it while idling it wouldn't be in the transmission or the tire.
If it doesn't do it while idling, but it does it when you start to give it gas, but before it actually takes off I would think its something in the CVT system. Well actually I guess it could be part of the CVT system at idle, since half of it is turning.
If it does it without having to throttle it up or ride it see if you can move your head around and listen to different parts of the bike. Possibly put it up in the center stand and turn your idle screw up so the rear tire starts turning.
I would almost be afraid to start it if it sounds really horrible. You might end up doing more damage then it already has. If you look it over and its nothing obvious on the outside you could try draining the motore and transmission and see if there is metal or something when you drain it. That would tell you if its something internal.

While on the center stand and at idle, you can also use an old mechanic's trick. Take a long screwdriver, 12" or longer if you have one of those really large ones, and push the handle against your ear and touch around the cvt case with the tip. Push it hard enough against your ear so you can hear the vibrations being transferred. Move around to different areas of the case and follow the noise. This will help you to isolate its location. As Paul said, if the back wheel is not turning, it is not the gears.
You will be using the screw driver in your ear like a stethoscope so, just probe around and see what you can find. You will hear all sorts of terrible noises, which may be normal, but, you should hear something above the background noise as you move the tip around. Once the area is located, you can open it up and diagnose the problem without the screwdriver.
Good luck.
Bill
PS I have found many a bad bearing using this method.

Ok i will give that screwdriver thing a go. Next question i have is what are the signs and symproms of bad bearings? My scooter has over 14000 miles on it and im thinking that could very well be the problem.

It makes a chirping sound when idling. Then when im riding i can hear. Kind of a rubbing scraping noise then when im coing to a stop it sounds like it is winding down.

That's good. You have isolated it to something that spins while stopped...again, this would leave out the final drive gears. Does the frequency of the noise change in pitch if you increase the idle speed with the throttle just a little bit? If you can't tell, run it on the center stand and increase the throttle higher than just above idle and see if you notice any change in the pitch of your noise. The screw driver trick can be used here carefully with the help of a friend to operate the throttle. Just don't rev too high and have it fly off the stand if you are pushing down on the cvt case and making the rear wheel hit the ground.
Wow, that is a lot of miles. Must be a good scooter.
Good luck.
