I was discussing the Tao Tao scooter I bought with a gentleman from China. While it is a brand name, Tao Tao can translate in two ways.
1. Go fast right now
2. A frequently misbehaving child
both seem like accurate descriptions!
Also it is NOT pronounced Tay- Oh Tay-oh.

Yeah I heard phil1979 say tay-oh tay-oh in one of his vids which threw me off for a second.
The proper pronunciation rhymes with cow cow

I thought it was supposed to be Dow Dow, but I say it Tow Tow anyway because I think most people would be confused with the D sound. All rhyming with Cow as Fox said. My TaoTao is definitely a # 2.  EDIT : taoism.net/tao/how-to-pronounce-tao/ |

That's because they make you "cry cry" and you need a " towel towel". Lol

I like #2 myself.
#1 would be OK if the translation was more like: Go fast after removing and replacing many parts and doing a lot of trial and error tuning.
If that were the correct translation it would be true.
So, I have to go with #2.

I don't think those are separate translations.
It's more of a 2-step process that all tao taos go through.

He explained that no chinese symbol is ever two syllables, which is why it cannot be Tay-oh Tay-oh.
Perhaps the most amusing part is that he has resorted to calling it a Tay-oh Tay-oh because that is what I keep calling it; he has given up trying to educate me.
