i am getting ready to tune the variator. i see the triton comes with 4 gm weights stock. i am looking at the scrappydog unit that comes with 5 gm sliders or the unit from daywot. $70 and $40 respectively. worth the price of admission or should i just stick with the stock unit which i have 5 6 & 7 gram rollers for. while i am ordering should i get some main springs?

Both of those look OK, but I have no experience with them. I have owned 5 or so of this style, which is a clone of a Malossi Multivar. It uses 16x13 rollers or sliders (includes a set of 4g rollers I believe). It improves acceleration from my experience. It's just a couple of mm larger diameter than the stock vari too. I have tore a couple of them up, but that was my doing... trying to get more out of them than was reasonable at times by modding. www.partsforscooters.com/169-140_minarelli_90cc_variatorI would skip the contra springs for right now unless you think the belt is slipping. Put the money into weights for the new variator instead I'd say. Sliders are my fav, but they are more expensive. If you were planning to but another accessory for the trans, I'd go with clutch springs if you don't have them already.

i am inclined towards the scappydog unit as it comes with 5g sliders, i might get lucky with the move from 4 to 5g..

Ive heard bad things about those knockoff sliders like scrappy sells. I dont think they perform nor last near as long as Dr.Pulley sliding weights.?. Cant go wrong with scrappy prices and shipping tho, for sure!

The ones I had weren't bad. The Dr Pulley sliders are tougher though. Treatland sells the real thing for about the same price that Scrappy sells knockoffs for. $0.04 more for genuine Dr Pulley.

Those stock weights were really light!
Go with the genuine Dr.P sliders.

when you find the sweet spot for roller weigh,t is it a direct weight transfer to sliders or is some adjustment required..it seems like most of the friendly priced suppliers are out of stock just now..at $30 a set it would be very expensive to bracket around a particular weight.

Sliders seem to need to be just slightly heavier, maybe .5 - 1g. Treatland still has most in stock, but they are missing the 5-6g. If you can't find 'em you can order above and below to make the weight. For example to get 5.5g you could use 3 4g and 3 7g. I find that it's money well spent to have plenty of sliders around. They don't go bad, or at least it takes a really long time, so having a few sets around for tuning ends up being no more costly than relacing flat spotted rollers every so often.

i have a way to put a .003 to .006" teflon coating in the roller/slider track. the lower friction would make the rollers skid but would work ok in sliding friction. how would the added thickness in track effect the variator operation.

I think it would be OK. They do have play. I'm not sure that it's worth the trouble though. I've read quite a few people saying Teflon coatings that came on their varis wore off pretty quick.

those types off coatings are good for not much more than 10 surface feet/min. it sounds like the instantaneousness acceleration is higher than that..ok scratch that thought.

My 72cc QMB 139 has a NCY Variator with teflon coating. 30 trips down the Strip and it's starting to wear through. Polish the ramps with a dremel. It would work just as well and use DrP sliders.
