Brother complained of it not going over 30 by the speedo and sputtering anything above half throttle. And seems slow. My first thought was slow=4t, but sputtering? And he was afraid to turn up on the tgb when I let him ride it, so he doesn't know anything above okay speeds. It was fine when I rode it last, and he has an uncanny ability to break anything he touches. Well, it did do what he said. FirstI check the oil, just because I neglected to the other day, put a little more in to bring it right. I take it apart more, find a kinda black sooty plug. Run back a touch more on the plug wire, it falls out of the coil. Apparently I want aware that Kymco made this coil without the nice screw end. Just a tip. Swapped it with the stock coil from my super 9, presto! Back to hitting 40. But... I started to smell something. Got home to find the stock bulb was, and has been for a long time, burning into the assembly. I take the front off, see that it's been melted, cracked, glued and taped by someone along its life line. Then, ooops, pulled the headlight from its plug and it falls into the lense Assembly. Go to try to take the lense off, break a bit if frozen plastic and stab myself. They definitely broke tabs and glued on the lense to the rest of it. Had to carve glue and some already mangled plastic to get the bulb to fit out of the hole in the back. Then found that it's plug connector was taped together as well. This thing was a disaster! Unfortunately it's needed by the brother until we figure out what we are going to do about the frozen throttle on taotao. So I had to do a quick job of it all, following the footsteps of the previous asshat. Electrical tape and glue. I'll try to find a whole headlight Assembly soon. I'll make it right.

Ouch. Never fun when a simple task unravels into a mess!

Okay, back to this. Brother handed me 100 bucks for parts. Where to start? Since last post, not much has been done, some cvt tuning, put in a 4 led fixture for the headlight that was burnt up with the assembly, and swapped the coil to one from the super 9 since the one on it lost grip to the plug wire. So, I'm thinking big valve head, intake, and carb to start? Maybe the a9 cam later?

At this point I just want it to act like it's got the bbk that's in it. I'm not expecting anything much more then 45. My brother would be ecstatic about that. Hell, then he could ride with me and I won't fall asleep. I've told him again and again to just get a cheap 150. He has problems...

At one point you said your 50 had more balls than this 70. If you really aren't getting much out of the engine, you could try to verify that the flywheel is setup correct and it's TDC aligns with the piston's TDC. I went through that long ago and a BBK still didn't wanna go much over 35MPH till I either removed the woodruff key and set the flywheel clocking myself or later got a new stock flywheel.
Be careful what BVH you get if you go that route. Many are intended for 50mm or larger bores. Even the 50mm kits suffer from low compression with them at times.

Thanks for that info. I will definitely check out my timing again. It would be hell if that's been the issue The whole time with this... I might skip the bvh and just open up the intake and exhaust port a little. I feel like this motor has great compression as is, I could check it, but no need to waste money.

You think if I was one tooth off on the cam that it could still run but just be terribly weak? This thing has too many strokes :/

Yes, it will run one tooph off and make you wonder why you can't get it tuned right. Not that I would personally know anything about that.

Here's where I have it set now, piston has pushed up, could tell by the compression. It should leak out slowly, right? T at the mark, valve rockers with no force on them. Looks spot on, from what I can tell. Input?

I just went back through the bbk section in the tech section. I've checked that the mark on the flywheel is actually top dead center with a small screw driver in the plug hole. Feels spot on there too. Hard to imagine Kymco messing that up. Does the dead spark tdc matter? If it rotates and fires in the same position either way then as long as the camshaft sprocket is lined up on one then it's okay? I could try to flip it 180 degrees, try on the other spark...

Well, I opened up the intake and the spacer so that it was matched to the head better. Took the head of and put some brake cleaner in each port to check valve seating. All checked out. Put the thing back together, almost seemed to run worse. But I adjusted the carb again and is now fine. weak. I dunno. I might be expecting more, just comparing to the Tao, kinda confuses me. Now to figure out what parts I want to throw at it. The stock carb is 18mm, I'm not convinced a 20mm will be much better, but it probably needs it.

If you havnt done it yet, check your iggy timing with a timing light, retarded spark on a 4T makes a retarded motor!

If you havnt done it yet, check your iggy timing with a timing light, retarded spark on a 4T makes a retarded motor! I need to get a timing light. Then learn how to use one. My dad showed me how when I was a small child, but that memory didn't survive the beer flood and pot forest fires... That I even remember him showing me is a miracle. On a 68 Chevy pickup.

I put a coil from my super 9 on there. 2t coil wouldn't act any different, right? It seems to run the same as the original coil, except it's not cutting out. My brother rode it to work last night, I'll ask him how it went.
