Hi everyone. I have a problem with my 2014 taotao. I've been kick starting it for months now because I was never able to get the electric start to turn over the engine. Last night my kick starter broke. When i crank the engine with the electric start it actually moves the kick start bar and makes some weird noises. I'm not sure where to start with this. I want to use my electric starter and forget about the kickstart but everytime I try to start the engine with electric is just keeps turning over. I know there i iss sspark/compression and all of that. Battery is good. If i pump the throttle 5-10 times i can hear it pop a couple times and seems to want to start. Any ideas would be great. I should also add that it was also difficult to start with the kickstarter but would always fire up after a few kicks (much better when warm) thanks!

If the battery is good and the starter turns but not fast enough to start the engine then the issue is probably weak compression. Have you adjusted the valves lately? I'd be willing to bet you have a tight valve, maybe both of them. It's one of the most common issues with these GY6's. You MUST check and adjust them two or more times a year.

I think I'll have to do the valve adjustment. I'll pickup the tools tomorrow.

Sounds to me like the starter bendix is not in properly or something else under your cvt cover.
For a quick check, just remove the bolts to your cvt cover and check everything first. There is a small bushing in the cover that the bendix tip will side into when you put your cover on.
Something is definitely binding up..

Yeah Silar's right. You'll have to pop the belt cover off and check out the kick start mechanism. Is the belt cover cracked/broken where the kick starter shaft is?

Thanks, yeah something is definitely not right with the kickstart mechanism. Will the scoot start with the electric starter if the kickstart mechanism is removed?

Yes. The electric start is a separate system.

If you freeze the video I posted earlier at about 3:24 you can see the part in this drawing I am referring to. It's part of the aluminum casting of the belt cover itself. I have seen a chunk of it break off there before from over-use and/or not having any grease in the hole so the little round gear is no longer supported properly and it binds up on the variator. Other times the little retaining clip on the pivot shaft pops out of it's groove and then the big half-moon gear and spring get all out of whack
