The scooter I have has seen a lot of rainy weather and over eight thousand miles of it. The kickstart has had moments where it would be rough to start it up. I found out that removing the pinion as photographed from the kickstart housing (or kickstart case after 8-10 bolts are removed, i.e. the CVT cover) and spraying some lubricant inside the pinion mount and on the pinion connecting part itself to incredibly smooth out kickstart operations upon final re-assembly. At first I thought it was thick oil in winter making things difficult to start, nope.

Use a dab of thick grease. Anything thin could get on the belt and cause slippage. I just rebuild two China kickstarts, not machined very well.

I use a dab of old style wheel bearing grease.
