Perhaps it sounds terrible but my budget PC performance desktop runs Windows 10 with Classic Shell start menu. I sort of have no choice since Wine won't emulate Flight Simulator X. However I know a few sysadmin Debian Linux addicts and have customized a few interfaces before. Linux Mint or Ubuntu LTS is what I recommend to folks who are sorta basic on computers but just want an easy to run clean OS.On-the go I have a portable laptop computer. It runs Ableton Live and unfortunately another Wine Linux issue with audio latency. I mean Windows 7/10 are okay.. They have Bitwig for Linux though but I can't afford another IDM music making license. =]

I use ubuntu Studio. It uses xfce. It comes pre loaded with video and audio production software. I've edited videos with kdenlive and I have found that is the closest to professional editing software you can get. Audor is great for audio production.
If I wasn't using it for production I'd try mint.
