So my GF bought a used 2007 Highlander Hybrid and she said it overheated last week. She got it to the house and it's been parked ever since. I looked and the radiator and the invertor reservoirs are both empty and there is no coolant visible when I removed the radiator cap. I looked online for information and I see that Toyota in all it's wisdom has a pink and a red coolant. My GF says the residue on the inside of the reservoirs looks pink. I read some stuff online that says the pink is the pre-mixed version of the red. This link is to a discussion that has another link to a .pdf service bulletin issued in 2002 from Toyota saying that the Red and Pink are compatible but there are a few posts saying not to mix them and that the service bulletin is outdated so I don't know what to believe. forum.ih8mud.com/threads/toyota-red-coolant-toyota-pink-coolant-which-one.602510/This is the Toyota service bulletin www.toyotapart.com/ENGINE_COOLANT_COLOR_CHANGE_T-PG010-02.pdf

Local auto parts store sell universal coolant. Think it's orange or yellow. They should be able to give you a compatible cross reference using their database. Things are getting crazy with fluids, most related to stretching service intervals. You could flush the system and put whatever you want in I would bet, so long as you don't mix different types. GM Dexcool used to be red, so maybe a Toyota only OE solution if you want to go that route. Both my 2014 Ram and my wife's 2014 Jeep have purple coolant. Weird stuff anymore. Liked it better when everything had green coolant and a carburator, and there were only 10 tire sizes.

Thnx ams. I am just going to get the Toyota red and dilute it and go with that.

Can't you call your local Toyota dealer and ask them? I mean it's still a Toyota so someone there should know. Ask to speak to the Mechanics Supervisor, that person had better know what goes in. Just a thought.

The main thing is that the pink is premixed with distilled water and has some additives to extend the life of the coolant. I wouldnt use the red in a hybrid if i were you. Also the engine coolant and inverter coolant are 2 seperate circuits fyi. Bleeding the two systems on toyota hybrids can be a pain in the @$$

I know my Yaris had the pink coolant in it when I got it. It said not to mix it in the handbook.

Well I finally dug into it and it turns out the radiator had a crack so I installed a new one which was no simple task and filled it up with pink blah blah blah and the damn thing is still overheating. The fans are kicking on when they are supposed to so I am thinking the thermostat is stuck or there is something wrong mechanically like a warped head or blown gasket from when she drove it home the first time it overheated. She didn't have enough sense to pull over and call AAA for a tow home. I can't even locate where the thermostat is without taking off a bunch of other stuff and there's not very much info online for it other than people posting that their water pump failed or they had overheated and ruined the engine. One guy said Toyota quoted him $7000 for a new engine installed. I warned my GF that she shouldn't buy a hybrid cause the repair bills are astronomical but she's a knuckle head. It had sat for a few years before she bought it. Funny thing is it ran great for a couple months before the overheat incident. I'm just gonna stop messing with it and let someone more qualified deal with it. I just hope it's nothing major.

The thermostat is near the back of the heads on the block. kind of under the power inverter. its a p.i.t.a. on that hybrid v6

Thanks birdman. I figured it was going to be a big hassle.

I hate working on cars. So much more hassle than bikes. Just taken the exhaust off my Yaris proper PITA. Good luck Dave

I enjoy working on cars. Both of mine are still under factory warranty so all I get to work on is my kids little Mazda. I replaced his transmission before he started driving last summer. Got the car for $500, and built a nice little first set of wheels out of it. It's more fun when your not in a hurry. The transmission swap took me about 7-8 hours over two days.
