So who doesn't want some cool jams for a nice ride on the scooter? I searched eBay up and down trying to find something for my daughter's brand new pink TaoTao ATM50-A1. I finally settled for these:

I bought the purple ones..
First of all, let me say, if you are thinking of purchasing a pair, make double even triple sure you tell them that you need the 8mm thread and NOT the 10mm thread. I've learned over the years when it comes to buying from guys in China, you HAVE TO do this a couple times. The reason is... most of these Chinese sellers DO NOT speak english. What happens when you E-mail them, is they will open the E-mail in a translator to get the jist of what you are saying. Also keep in mind, the translation software they use typically will not translate dialect very well. So instead of saying something like "Please send me the 8mm adapter", consider using a mashed up version of this that will translate well into Chinese... example "PLEASE TO BE SEND 8MM THREAD FOR TAOTAO SCOOTER". Once they acknowledge this.... SEND IT AGAIN AND REPHRASE IT A BIT. Try to avoid words like "THE" and "AIN'T". This will save you the pain in the ass trouble of having to return something and having to wait FOREVER for it to arrive from China.
But anyway... to digress onto the actual product... It took about 2 weeks for these to get here. Hookup is pretty straight forward. Red and black wire. The other wires connect the speakers together and are color matched. You'd have to be a complete idiot to mess that up. As of this review, I have not yet installed them on my daughter's scooter. I have them hooked up to a spare power supply's 12v source to see them in action and test them out.
The instructions for them are TERRIBLE. It's a poor Chinese to English translation... here check it out:
It took me a bit to figure out LONG PRESS FOR THIS, SHORT PRESS FOR THAT.
It does retain the FM channel and/or mp3 track you were listening to, but does NOT retain the clock time, nor volume when powered down (UNLESS YOU WIRE THEM DIRECTLY TO THE BATTERY AND NOT A TOGGLE).
The default startup volume when powered on, is 22, which, just testing here in the house, is FRIKKEN LOUD!!
Max volume is 30, it is recommended to only go up to 25. I suppose that is for the least distortion, and to keep from blowing the speakers.
But for as loud as they are at 25, I'd say they are about perfect. There is no bass to be heard, just high treble and a bit of midrange. I'm guessing this is by design for sound at outside traveling volume.
These are advertised as capable of only 4 gig on the microSD card, but the test MicroSD I am using is a 16 gig and it seems to be reading it just fine.
I can't give a REAL assessment of how good the FM tuner is at the moment. I have this hooked up in my office, which is downstairs in the basement so of course, alot of FM signals are blocked. I am able to pull in the local radio stations on a couple channels, so I guess in all fairness I can say you will be able to AT LEAST get your local stations with these mirrors.
Now these DO also light up. I thought they lit up all the time, found out after hooking them up they light up when the volume is high and beat to the music... OK, that's kinda cool!!
The mirrors themselves are stationary. There is no way to adjust them once you have them tightened down except to swivel up and down, so you're gonna want to make sure you have them EXACTLY as you want them before tightening them down.
I guess my only real bitch about them before even installing them, is the clock not retaining the time. But then, I guess setting the time is something one can do while warming the scooter up... then again.. the time doesn't display while listening to music, so screw it!! Who needs the time anyway?
This ALSO has a motion alarm... though I'm not sure how they expect me to use it when there has to be power running to it for the alarm to work... duh... those silly Chinese anyway... so yeah, if your an idiot and leave your scooter running then yeah, the alarm system is a great add in.. but then YOU LEFT YOUR SCOOTER RUNNING MORON, YOU DESERVE TO HAVE IT STOLEN!!Sheesh..
But, not that I care. The main reason I got these, and so far it seems they will be perfect... is for my daughter to jam to her Breaking Benjamin and Shinedown MP3's while crusin'
I'll give an update on these probably this weekend when I have a chance to install them on her Taotao and take it out for a spin.
She has a universal windshield on her scooter, so I'm kind curious how that will affect the overall sound.. I'm thinking that windshield will probably help.
If these sound as good while riding as they do now, I'll probably pick up a pair for my Spree too.
Oh, and a couple more things... These also have a 3.5mm LINE IN jack, as well as a USB port on the bottom for charging your phone, playing MP3's from USB instead of MicroSD, and what have you, and according to the instructions, can be sync'd to Bluetooth, although, I don't believe this set HAS bluetooth, I'll have to check that out later as well.
