I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out whats going on with my scoot. I installed a 72cc kit last year and it ran great through the season, towards the end I couldn't get the thing to start. It seemed like it was after I changed the #95 jet I had in it. I've tried 4 other jets and still the same problems. once the thing is running everything seems normal. I have to jump the bat. because it takes a couple of mins to get it started. I even went back to the old air filter that came with it and it didn't have an affect on starting performance. At the end of my rope here, any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Sounds like you need to check out your auto bystarter/enricher/choke or whatever you want to call it. Find out how in the tech section here.

Hard starting usually means a valve has tightened up. Check the gaps again.

I would recommend adjusting the valves also! .004 is a decent setting for both. The main jet size does not effect starting. Are you sure the battery can hold a charge? You may just need a new battery. Will it Kick start without problems? You should not have to jump the scoot to start. A couple minuets of using the electric start will drain the battery enough so it wont start.

battery is new as of last year, disconnected it for winter and put it on trickle before use. it takes a solid 3 mins to get it to fire, I jump it so i don't smoke the bat. broke the kick start last year trying to get the thing to start. I also changed my auto enricher with another, still have the same problem. I even re routed the wiring for the enricher because I thought the stater may be producing too much rf. I'm going to check the valve adjustment again but its only been about 200 miles since I last adjusted it. If anything they may be a bit loose, can here them tapping. Like I said, I'm running out of options.

How's the oil level? Does it seem to be "self filling"?
Could be the vacuum petcock is not working/working properly. Easy enough to check..... remove the fuel line on the carb with the engine shut off, you should only get as much fuel out of the pipe as what is contained downstream of the vacuum petcock.

After valve adjustment check the compression. I had one that would start with 75 psi compression but it ran weak. A guy's scooter that I worked on has low compression. It will kick start but won't crank fast enough on the electric starter to punch in enough compression to start. May need to re-ring or re-kit if compression is low. You ought to fix your kick starter just to have it for emergencies. Usually around $15 - $20 to fix.

I actually got rid of the vacuum petcock because there wasn't a port on the 72cc head for it, I have a manual valve now. as for the kick starter it was actually the inner case housing for the kick starter that broke, not sure I want to replace the outer case. I am going to check the compression after the valve adjustment. I was just hoping it wouldn't come to that. I'll run a few more test and keep ya posted.

Begin by trying a new spark plug. 95 seems large, I use 85 to 88 with a 72cc and stock aircleaner.

plug seems fine but i ordered a new one. I'm going to swap it out when it comes in. I'll keep my fingers crossed. I'm thinking it might be a compression issue. testing for that tomorrow.

as for the kick starter it was actually the inner case housing for the kick starter that broke, not sure I want to replace the outer case. Take it to a competent welding shop and have it welded.... probably $20 or less.

I fixed the problem in a rather unorthodox way. I sold the scooter and bought a 2011 zuma 125. lol. thanks for all your help guys.

I was just curious about this statement "disconnected it for winter and put it on trickle before use. " Do you mean you left it on the trickle charger for storage all winter? That is what you are supposed to do. Or did you take it out of storage and put the charger on only when you were ready to use the scooter again? Even just a little loss of power from storage off a charger could keep the battery from having enough to fire it up. Learned that the hard way.
