So I am looking into getting my first scooter... I am looking for something cheap that I can ride to school, work and just in general save on gas. So I know its PROBABLY not the best scooter, but I was looking at a Tao Tao Vetas scooter. I am kinda limited on my choices because I live in California... stupid harsh CARB / Clean Air Management rules -__- And well roads around me are anywhere from 25-45. I was wondering if it is possible to boost up the speed on a 49cc/ 50cc scooter? I'm not looking to race or anything, but wanna keep up with the flow of traffic so I don't get pulled over for driving too slow. I know it's possible, because I've seen people make these things faster.

Yes, it is possible to make these Chinese scoots a bit faster but, for a 4T scoot 40 mph (real speed not what is on the speedo) is probably best to figure on. Adding a 72cc cylinder kit, tuning the carb and cvt should get you in that area. Getting more than that without seriously compromising dependability is not really achievable as far as I know. Bill PS That is a nice looking scoot.

+1 on what Bill said above. If you are on a pc look to the left and click the youtube button. There you will find many videos to help you out with almost any questions you may have. The first section entitled My Scooter Help / How-To Videos has loads of valuable information. Such as carb and CVT tuning. doing this stuff yourself is not hard and will save you lots of money. It also has an added benefit of you will know that your scoot is tuned the best it can be when you are done.

Find a used 2 stroke if you want to keep up with traffic. They're much faster than 4 strokes. AND, when it comes to Chinese scooters, I think the 2 strokes are more dependable, certainly easier to work on.

OK, just kidding. If the 49cc class is what you are going for then the fastest scoots are indeed the 2T's. I hate to say this but Spaz is right. Bill

"live in California . . wanna keep up with the flow of traffic"
No advantage for a California 50cc. Select at least a 125cc . . include Lance in your research.

That's a good point. In the People's Republic Of California, you will not be allowed to make any mods to your scoot. Here in KY, we can do anything we want to them.

In California you can do anything you want to your scooter modification wise.. Trust me. The CARB is just strict on what manufacturers can sell as road legal.. Once the consumer has it, the consumer can do whatever it is they want.
But what spaz said, get a 2t if you want to keep up with crazy california drivers. Lets be honest even though the written speed limit is 45mph the real flow of traffic can be more like 50mph.
Also, where in California are you? Im in northern cal the east bay area

800 dollars for a 50cc Chinese scooter? That's insane. The Tao Tao ATM50-A1 is only $649.95 from provenpowersports with free shipping. www.provenpowersports.com/collections/taotao-scooters/products/taotao-adult-50cc-gas-moped-scooter-atm50-a1?variant=18715289799It's where I bought my daughter's pink one from. Just gave it, it's 2nd oil change today, gonna put the new carb jets from scrappydogscooters on it later this week. Bought an NGK Iridium plug for it a while back, and a new carb. Gonna do an LED conversion on it too. So far it has been an outstanding scooter. Top speed on a flat road with GPS, shows 36-37ish. Of course, the Speedometer shows something like 40-42ish.

Just want to point out the importantness of the mentioned 72CC kit, I've run both those and 83CC kits and unless you really want the extra power of the 50mm bore you're going to get the same top speed out from anything larger than a 72, because they're all going to rev up to about 8k and max out.
