Sad to say but soon, there won't be anyone left who knows how to fly one.

True that. In my area there is 1 of only 2 flying Lancaster Bombers in the world(they are in the process of rebuilding a third). It is true that they have older pilots but they do train one or two younger ones a year(by younger I mean around 45)

I love the sound of those piston engines and the props. Jets just don't make it for me, even turboprops.
I am sure there will still be people around with the skills to fly these things in the future. There is no place for error with these old priceless planes.

There is no place for error with these old priceless planes. I love Jets, as well as the sound of a B-17 at idle. I live under the glide path for runway 21 at our local airport and we get, every now and then an F-16 or FA-18 taking off at 3:00 a,m. in full burner. I love the sound...my cat does not. I hope some young guys train to fly these but, it is going to be a lost skill I think just as the maintenance/repair of these wonderful engines will be also. I remember a Car Talk episode with Click and Clack, the Tappet Brothers (Rest in peace Tommy) where a guy had an older car with a carburetor and he had been to 10 repair shops, including 2 dealerships, and not one mechanic had ever even seen a carb. much less, knew how to work on them. Their advice for this poor guy was to try to find a mechanic in his 50's because he would know about carbs. At least we have here with our scoots a bunch of young folks learning about carbs and carb tuning. I think this is a really good thing. Bill

I live under the flyway to the downtown KC airport. Jets just screech but sometimes as you say they do rumble and the sound vibrates our chest and soul. I like going to the drag-strip and car races just for that sound. -Maybe that is why I don't hear so good anymore, that and rock music... Damn cicadas are howling 24/365. -Wait there are no cicadas around right now...

I got the chance to see B-29 FiFi fly this summer along with a B-17 a F-22 raptor, F-18 demo, the Blue Angels and the Snowbirds all in one show. I mainly went to see the P-51 B-17 and B-29 because I play War Thunder lol. Doc was a very nice restoration and good to see. There must have been 300,000 people there that day in the grass starring into the sun for 8 hours starting at the crack on dawn.

I took my two children to an air show about 20 years ago. I had to force water and food into them. They spent the whole day looking like baby birds staring at the sky with their mouths open.
