Surface prep is your best friend when it comes to painting. Take your time. Use plastic primer and let it cure the proper time. If its humid when you paint give it even more time to dry/cure. Light coats dry/cure faster than one heavy coat. Sanding, lots of sanding. Don't even think about short cuts. Make sure the primer and base coat and if you clear coat it are compatible with each other. Id use a 2 part clear so it hardens and will be fuel resistant in case you spill gas when filling

scuff and sand well.
I work with sanding and painting motorcycles all day long. Scuffing before you paint serves a purpose. It gives the paint something to adhere to. Sanding ensures you have a nice smooth surface to work with. The finer the grit, the finer the detail. You have it within your means to make your scoot as beautiful as you want. An ABSOLUTE MUST after you sand and scuff, is WIPE DOWN EVERY PART with an alcohol soaked lint free cloth before painting. You want to pick up every debris particle you can before applying the first coat. And maintain that clean for the clear/flat coat. WEAR GLOVES!! I'm gonna tell you what is the BIGGEST pain in my ass, and what is most preventable when it comes to painting, and that is FISHEYE. What is the #1 cause of "FISHEYE"... oil... what is the #1 cause of oil on a painted surface? HUMAN SWEAT!!
CLEAN YOUR FUCKING HANDS !!!
Deodorants, perfumes, powders, and just plain ole' sweat, can contaminate your paint job. Don't have a paint booth, but do have a garage? Then seal that shit up yo!! Just a small section is all you need to get a "ahem" factory quality paint job.
