So...I am starting to think I am getting ripped of by my mechanic. Had my carb rejetted from a 70 to a 80 and had a expansion chamber put it. He had removed the air filter and had no filter going to the carb. The scooter ran great for about 3 days then it began to shut off while it was running...until it wouldnt start at all. So I took the carb out gave it to him to look at and he tells me all my seals are bad and my ports are all clogged.

Unless you are building a race scoot, I don't know what decent mechanic is gonna send you out without an air filter. You may have debris in your carb, but if you don't wanna do the work yourself, I'd suggest looking for a new mechanic. It's just not practical to use no filter on a street scooter. Either that or ask him if he'll repair it at no charge if you didn't ask for the filter to be removed.

So the ports being clogged is most likley because the scooter was running without the air filter right?
He also said the seals are bad. What could this be a result of. You think I can get it running again if I soak the carb in carb cleaner fluid?

Considering the circumstances, I would have to think that if the carb is clogged up it would be most likely due to the lack of a filter. The passages in a carb are very small and easily clogged. There's not that much rubber in the carb, wonder what exactly he's referring to? Could just be BS, hard to say. Yeah, that's the right style of carb. Some of the Etons have manual enrichers, but you can just swap out the auto that comes on most carbs for the manual.

I spoke with the mechanic today and I am going to pick up the carb tomorrow. He said one of the air ports are clogged and he tried everying from air to soaking it in carb fluid. I am going to try to work on it myself. Any ideas?

It sounds like he's tried the right stuff. Spray carb cleaner and compressed air through all passages. Soak. Other than finding someone with an ultrasonic cleaner, that's about all you can do. That might cost as much as a new carb, dunno.

Well, I got the carb back...and took it apart. The air/fuel screw got stripped, but I should still be able to get it back in. I want to try soaking it in some paint thinner or drain cleaner. Does that sound like a good idea?

So I got the carb listen above in the mail today. I took it out of the box adjusted the a/f and idea screws to 2 turns and connected it to the scooter. I tried starting it for about an hour and even sprayed some starter fluid in there...and it would turn over, but it would not start. I gave up after an hour. I took the carb back out and unscrewed the bowl which was filled with gas... I guess I can check the spark tomorrow, but im sure thats fine. Any other ideas/?

Checking spark is very quick and easy, so start there and just get that out of the way. Actually, perhaps crank it over a few times and then look at the plug before you check for spark. Knowing if it's wet or dry will give you an idea of what you need to be doing.

I checked the spark plug it was black and a little wet. So I made sure it was nice and tight and gave it a few more tries. It kept starting and then shutting off so I was making some sort of progress. Then I decided to put my hand over the intake on the carb and it ran for a good 15 seconds. So I thought let me try puttin on the intake elbow and I got it running for a minute then it shut off. There is no airbox...the mechanic took it off.

I'd be asking for my airbox back or a replacement.

Well I was able to retrieve my airbox from the mechanic, but my scooter just bogs down when I connect it. I had the scooter going for a little while with the new carb, but I went around the block once and it dies. It also doesnt go past 30...it use to go 50. I spoke to the mechanic and he said the scooter ran weird after he put on the expansion chamber...whatever that means. Any other ideas here on how to tune this thing?

Wonder if he checked the pipe for restrictions.
