Does it ride all the way to the edge of the variator? Have you checked?

It did with the old variatior but its 5mm short on the Malossi. I have more tuning to do.

Weird. I looked up specs for that Athena belt. It's advertised as being 16.8mm x 837mm. The Malossi belt, what I have right now, is 16mm x 836mm.
Does the Malossi variator close up further than the stock variator?

I didn't check it before I put it on. The bad one I have did close up. The Athena belt doesn't go all the way down. I need to order dome shims to help that but maybe I should just get the Malossi belt. It would solve the problem with out screwing my top end. I'll try and pull it and compare it to the old Malossi and the stock variator. Maybe I'll try the old belt to see how it does.

Monday I spent some time tuning and decided that this pipe is just to hard to get in tune. I don't have a needle that will work with it. The stock pipe was just fine and I did have that in tune. So I put it back on and it was too late for a ride so I changed the water I put in early on for coolant, its starting to get cold at night. I hope to get back on it after work today.

I got distracted by other shiny objects. Now I'm having issues with my knees and can't spend much time on my feet. I hope I'll get back to it soon. I have a new Malosdi belt and I picked up a Next R for $79 new. I keep looking at it and feeling guilty that I'm ignoring it.

It was on the rack when my knee started bothering me and I had ordered a Next R pipe for it that has sat since last fall. I decided that the 2 stock exhausts were too hard to tune for and the Next-R was the cheapest option and everyone says is easy to tune. It was not the easiest install but in the end it looked good:
I started the main jet at 86 and the needle in the center. I didn't get out of the driveway. I then went to 82 and the needle 1 clip down. I got into the street but no further. I then went to 78 and made it a little farther. then it was 76 and I made it around the block. So then I went to 74 and It was good at mid throttle, I had it up to 9600 rpm. But full throttle was not an option. I then went to 72 and it was no better. At full throttle it hunts and surges. It may be that the CVT is causing the problem. The battery died so I left it to charge and put the weights that came with the pipe in as well as the Malossi belt that Thomas TPFL suggested. I hope to find time this week to get back to it. My next step may be to replace the Carb with a clone Deloorto like the one on the Pink Scoot. The one on the Derbi is from Treatland and may be fine but I have been having a lot of trouble tuning with it so why not.
As always any suggestions will be appreciated.

After reading Mopedarmy article on How to Tune a Dellorto Phbg carb I ordered a W7 needle and 30 and 40 slides. They were out for delivery so I had time to start playing. I put a W7 needle I had in at 1 clip down. It started nicely and warmed up. I readjusted the A/F screw and Idle and took it for a ride. It was still hunting from 1/2 to Full and bogging from 1/4 to half. At 1/4 throttle it was hitting 9000 rpm and was doing quite nicely. It was 6:00 then and I saw the mailman drive off so I went to find my treats and had nothing but junk mail. My slide is a 50 and Mopedarmy suggests for a kitted scoot you use a 40 side that will be my next attempt. I also found PHBG Tuning made easy. I guess I'll print it out and follow the 14 simple steps with an addendum with corrections on 2-6. I hope this goes well, this is a great scoot as far as handling and comfort. It stops on a dime with the big wheels and front and rear disks. It would make a great running around town scoot. Edit: after getting cleaned up I looked in my mailbox and guess what magically appeared, my treats. Maybe tomorrow I'll find time to tune.

Got a surprise day off today. I put the 40 slide in with the W7 needle at 3 clips down. It was way to rich so I came up one clip and it was better. I then pulled the clone I was working with and put another one in and it made no difference. I had a 71 jet in and the plug seemed a lean. I then went to 73, the plug was better but I still have the surging. No matter what I do I have that surging from 3/8 to full throttle. After reading some posts on surging I think I have a lean condition. Next time I work on it I'll look for a possible air leak some place. It may even be at the throttle cable, I wasn't as careful as I have been with other scoots when I put that on. It probably is something that simple.

I dug the Predator out of the back of the garage where I had ignored it when I couldn't get it tuned in. I put a real dellorto 19mm carb on it with the switched out 262Au atomizer for 2 stroke. I started with the 45PJ and a 95 main jet 30slide and W9 needle one clip down and smoked out the garage:
I couldn't even get it back u the drive. I guess it was too rich al the way around. I went to a 37 PJ and 85 main. Still too rich. Then a 77 Main. I was getting close but it was sputtering off idle. I swapped slides to a 50 and still had the sputter. Went to a 35 pilot jet and it was getting there. Back to 30 slide and w9 needle. Almost, then a 34 PJ and screw all the way in and it was just about there. I was thinking maybe I'll live with it, but no I want perfect. Put in a 32 pj and the battery was dead and no go on kicking. I'll be back in today and get it right. Then its on to the CVT and I'll see what its doing. I have now gotten to where I can change a needle in about 2 minutes. Once you have the trick its easy. Its finding the right way.

Before you go crazy with the jet swaps confirm what size your putting in with a mini drill bit set and caliper. Myself and others have had many mis labeled jets lately. Just recently I found all of my 85-95 jets are all the same size... a 98.

Ryan, I was doing just that. They are off by a small bit but I am at least going larger and smaller. I was finally able to tune this in. I used this method to tune the carb because it was all over the place. I was close on my main jet but had a min throttle sputter. I started rich and worked my way down from a 30 slide and w9 needle 3 clips down. I ended up at a 50 slide and a w9 needle on the leanest setting. It wasn't great but it worked. I think part of the problem is that even with the snorkel out the intake is too small. I may look at altering it so I can get more air in. I went up on the Main jet to a 76 and took it for a ride. It was still sputtery but I could feather it and make it work. Once it hit the pipe it was great and took off. I then decided to go with the Denso IWF24 plug instead of the 27. Malossi recommends those plugs for their kits. The 24 was the trick. It was nice and smooth through the power band. I forget that plugs are part of the tuning process. It seems to hit the pipe at about 7500rpm and you can feel it take off. I did a nice ride and got it warmed up. The temperature gauge was just a little hot so I went to a 77 MJ and took another ride and it ran cooler. I got slowed in downtown traffic and it ran a little over normal on the gauge. I remembered that these don't have fans and need to move to keep the radiator cool. I may drop the slide to the 40 and see what I get, maybe it will like it a little richer. I got the plastics back on, not that I can't do everything through the seat hole and with the plastics on. It is easy to adjust with all of the plastics on. I'm off to try the 40 slide and do some more cleaning. Edit: I tried the 40 slide and no go, I had to drop the A/F mixture all the way lean and it was still too rich. It also sputtered at 1/2 throttle so thats not the way. Something I forgot to talk about was the CVT. I was running 4gm rollers and it was okay but not revving right. I put the 6.5 that came with the cultivar and its much smoother acceleration. I opened the clutch and I didn't have the strength to pull the springs they are really tight. I tried to take the cover off of the torque driver and it is really on there. All I could do was bend the edges up on it. I think I'll invest in a Delta clutch and get some springs and contra springs so I can tune the CVT and get a better take off and get the RPM's up. Right now its taching out at about 9000 and I don't have full travel. Its all a process and the engine is running well and the CVT is okay at the moment.

After riding with old geek on Friday I decided that my problem is that I'm not getting enough air. Here is my theory, I have the needle and slide set up as lean as I have needles and slides for and I still have a small sputter just before mid throttle. If I open up the air box I should get more air and I can richen the mixture up some. So today I started with a less dense air filter with a light oiling, just enough to catch dust. It took the sputter away and the scoot accelerates much smoother. My next step is to cut the air box opening some and let bore air in. I would drill some holes but its the original air box and I don't want to visibly alter it. Of course I could also go to an ope filter and that may be what I do eventually. I'm still teaching out at 8500 rpm and need to do some CVT tuning to try and get the RPM's up. Right now its quite ridable and I was doing 45mph most of the day on Friday. The plug looks good. One problem with these scoots is they don't have a fan as, we cruised the strip and were only putting along at 25mph the needle was up. After we were cruising at 45 it dropped down to its normal point, no boil over but just running hot. Of course these scoots are designed to race and not cruise the strip. Next paycheck I'll get a Delta clutch and a nice range of rollers to tune with.
