The instructions say to use 91 octane. But i thought i read that Chinese ratings are different than ours. So, what gas should i use for the scooter?

I have a 50mm BBK with right at 4,000 miles now and it's running great. I m fairly certain now I will reach and pass 5,000 miles with it.
I have ALWAYS used regular 87 octane and my engine is very healthy so far. But note that it is jetted to run "slightly" rich.
I recommend on really hot days you might use mid grade or Premium as it burns cooler.
But the most important thing is that you never, ever hear engine knock or pinging. If you ever hear that, use Premium only because pinging or knocking can cause severe engine damage quickly.

yes most other countries use a different octane rating. if they wanted you to use our usa high octane it would say 95+. but as a general rule you want to use the lowest octane your engine will allow.

I plan on doing a half premium, half VP110 for my Spree after it's broke in. Highest octane around town you can get is 87. I refuse to use ethanol too. You can get the 90 octane stuff at the pump 20 miles away, but I figure... meh, I'll just run over to the local Dyno and get the VP110 and mix it. I'd run straight VP110, but that stuff is expensive.

I use mid-grade 89 octane, and have had no problems with it. A couple extra octane on small engines is a good thing. When you get @100mpg a few cents for the mid-grade is a good investment.
If your bike has Electronic fuel injection then use 87 octane regular as the EFI will compensate for it.

I use Shell 93 octane. It is the best gas available around these parts and, my scoot uses so little, I figure what the heck. I have been using it for well over a year now and, no problems. I have been wanting to add a bit of sea foam to it but, I never remember to get some when I am at a place that sells it. One of these days I will.

Bill, GET THE SEAFOAM!!!! Keeps the fuel system clean & stabilizes the gas for a year. Gasohol phase seperates in 60 to 90 days.
Extra octane doesn't hurt in small engines. I do sometimes put 92 or 93 octane premium in my scoot. Some stations don't sell mid-grade.

For some reason my scoot is a fronted when I put anything other than BP or Shell 93 octane in it. It runs like an old lawnmower on anything but those two.

My 2t requires premium (93 octane). Both of my 4t's require 90 octane. If it runs good on premium, keep using premium. For the small amount of money for the difference between grades of gas, I don't worry about it and put in the higher octane.

Sounds like you have a lot of compression. Do you have a BBK or shaved Head (the scoot-not you LOL). a high compression ratio would require premium gas.

Nope. A mostly stock 2012 TaoTao VIP 49cc 4 stroke. I have only done a few things to it. Notably an unsealed 18mm cvk Keihin carb with a #85 main jet, a K&N style open air filter, and a drilled exhaust (drilled before and after the catalytic converter in the muffler). Though the year that my scoot was manufactured there was a chance of receiving a "secret 63cc" motor instead. I still have yet to order new gaskets to replace the old ones so I can tear into it and measure the cylinder. So who knows... I live in Nashville, TN and we are somewhere around the 550-750 ft elevation range depending on what part of town.

On that note, if anyone is willing to donate an extra head gasket, I will gladly tear into it in the name of science!
