So I picked up my solution to Rat Bob's bent triple tree today, the result of paying it forward, a free Sunny JL50QT-8 with a striaght frame and forks, and a ton of parts I won't use. So, prior to really tearing into it with a crowbar and hammer, if anyone need any of the intact body panels, lights etc, I will be more than happy to give them to you, you'll just need to pay the shipping somehow.

A perfectly straight triple tree with 27mm fork tube mounting holes, and my 27mm shocks slide in with just a twist. Ordered a new brake set for the front, new cables and grips too. The battery is good so that's a bonus.

actually this is the frame that will become Rat Bob, everything is getting moved over and that frame scrapped. But I am going to lose the color scheme, thinking black powder coat on the frame and handle bars, red rims with whitewalls.

Frame is ready to grind and send off to be blasted and it rains... Got the engine cleaned up, I honestly didn't expect to end up with another engine, don't even know if it runs, it appears to have good compression, no knocking or anything when I rotate it, if I don't rebuild it, I'm hoping to use the head for my other engine with the broken exhaust stud, so I'll pull the head and see what everyhting looks like.

Ran about 50 miles in town, side streets, lot's of slow down and accelerate, stayed under 5K, ran it rich, no problems except for an intermittent idle issue, new carburetor comes tomorrow, still no jets so that will have to wait.
My first impression, honestly, a bit better acceleration than the 80cc bbk it replaced, but not enough to write home about, doesn't seem much better on hills. I *assume* it's because of a compression issue due to head volume as someone mentioned elsewhere, I have a new 20mm carburetor coming tomorrow like the one I have now, #90 main/#30 idle, swap in a #100/#35, thinking I should have just went ahead with the A9 to begin with so I ordered that with the jets.

I decided to go ahead and install the new carb without the bigger jets, mainly because the old one was set up for the 80cc bbk, including the needle valve, I had also adjusted the floats because it tended to flood a bit in stock.
Did a textbook install, actually had a fairly easy time with the mixture screw and took it out for a test ride. A noticeable improvement across the board actually, got some of the top end back and good throttle response from closed to WOT and the acceleration is even better.
Can't wait to see what I get with the A9 cam and jets now.

Bonus warm day #1: got all the excess attachment points etc ground off and smoothed, frame sanded and primed. Gonna be a lot easier to mount the saddle seat to this frame and end up with a much cleaner install.

This is the old frame in a similar state earlier this year. As I understand it, the company made a 50cc and a 150cc version of the model with the 50cc motors being hacked into the 150 frame. It's also about 30 pounds heavier at least, the new frame is lighter but of a similar structural design, there may be some additional bracing added for piece of mind.

Put one of those stabilizer bars that go from the front of the frame under the handlebars to the bar under the seat. That should stiffen the frame up a lot.
Hope this one turns out really well (and fast).

Got the forks and triple tree painted. I'm hoping I can fit a handlebar stand from a chuckus and open up some possibilities on the bars, seems possible just looking at it. I was considering swapping the cheapo steel rims for the aluminum ones that came with the donor scoot, just for more weight savings, not sure if they fit what I'm doing with the retro bobber style especially with the whitewalls I have planned. Planned on keeping the wheels red
