I am not a baseball fan at all but recently there are a lot videos showing Cups Fans crying, showing tears of joy since their team has won the "World Series" after 108 years I think. At this point I would like to congratulate them for such an achievement, especially after such a long time.
Now those fans keep repeatedly saying "...we are the world champions!" Since when is winning an "American Tournament" make you a world champion? And why is it called "World Series" in the first place? For it to be a world tournament or make the team that wins it a world champion teams from other countries must participate. Right?

Tsimi, I wish they would open it up to Japanese teams so that we can see how we compare.

Not many countries play baseball in a way that the USA does. Japan is one of very few countries that made baseball their national sports. It's really crazy, sometimes I think the Japanese people like baseball more then the US people. Anyways, there is a world championship if I recall and national teams like the USA, Cuba, Korea, Japan and a few others fight for the "real" world championship title. You win that title you can call your self a true "world champion".
I guess that winning something after 108 years makes it feel like winning the world championship?

Easy answer? Tradition.
Longer answer? "The real reason behind the name is thanks to Barney Dreyfuss who was the owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1903, he wrote to the owner of the Boston Red Sox challenging them to a ‘World’s Championship Series’. The Pirates were the best team in the National League and the Red Sox were the best in the American League.
The games went ahead and Boston won the series five games to three. Over time, the 'World’s Championship Series' name has been shortened to the World Series and has been played every year apart from 1904 and 1994."

Tsimi, I wish they would open it up to Japanese teams so that we can see how we compare. It wouldn't be an apples to apples comparison. Japanese ball is different, bats different, fields different and even how they play is different.
