It's not easy being me but apparently someone else wants to be me and rack up close to $30,000 in debit. What a f***ing pain in the ass this is calling all these places. I've got better things to do with my time then fix this f up. Most of this was done in person in stores so hopefully this a hole will get caught. The messed up part is I don't have a credit card anywhere. WTF Venting over, sorry.

Wow. I just got a new credit card today after discovering last week that someone spent $150 4 times in a gas station in Arizona and one $1 authorization charge at a 7-11 in Illinois. Luckily all I had to do was get the card company to handle it. I had someone rack up charges on a PayPal card years ago at tons of porn sites. PayPal made me call them all myself to get the charges dropped.
The kind of messed up part is that when I called the credit card company, I asked what they would do about it. They basically said they were just here to make sure their customers don't have to pay. Big chain gas stations definitely have cameras covering anywhere you'd be able to pay. They have exact transaction times I'm sure, and it's at least 4 times that it happened. Seems like it wouldn't be that tough to get a look at the crook. Credit card companies have the money to spare to deal with this if they'd like. Kinda figured they may want to stop this sort of thing, but maybe not.

It would help if corporations were actually held accountable. We blew through 4 credit cards last year because of some stupid arse corporation getting hacked.

Oh damn dude that sucks big time. I've heard of folks put through nightmares of no fault of their own due to identity theft. It's ridiculous the hassle that you the victim has to go through to get this mess sorted out. I know you're a smart guy Ryan so you'll get it figured out but just chaps my arse to hear of this happening to good folks! Good luck bro!

I'm getting it handled I just need to call all these card / stores to let them know the situation, put a hold on my credit through the credit bureaus. There is a lot of cards acquired or attempted to get its close to 10-12 stores plus credit cards. Today I'll get a police report. Some of the stores are where I used to live, but my relatives still live there.... I hope just coincidental. I'll get this behind me soon.

Man, that sucks, My wife was a victim of Identity theft.
Looks like this type of theft is very common today. A shame that you didn't even have credit cards and it still happened. These people should be caught...and executed.
Good luck man. I feel your pain.

Thanks for the support!
We have the technology to unlock our phones with a fingerprint, so why can we use that technology to verify who one is when applying for credit.
I think this probably comes from my work. I get a lot of background checks, security screens, my drivers license gets scanned almost daily etc. So it just takes one dumbass IT guy to f*** me over. I think I'm going to start using my carry permit as my state issued ID.

I saw a story just yesterday where a "trusted insider" I think in human resources for a large well known company had stolen thousands of employees personal information and sold it.

I've heard that if you sign an affidavit of fraud with the law enforcement agency involved......state? federal? both?.....then this forces the creditors to view these debts as not belonging to you. It was a long time ago, actually, that I learned of this. But I'll go ahead and hope that the law is still the same.
Now I've also heard that creditors like to drag their feet about that. I can even see their reason, bad though it is. They know who you are and they know where to find you. They don't know who the other guy is.
But if you've got some legal recognition that these debts are fraudulent, then that ought to protect you from judgements, liens, garnishments, stuff like that.
I'm also not nearly knowledgeable enough to be giving advice on this. But playing your cards right, you might build a legal case against those who are being lazy by trying to keep your feet in the fire.

Never had it happen personally, but read about it on credit forums (yeah, I'm a credit geek) and it can sometimes be a real nightmare to fix. I would suggest getting myFICO for something like 20 dollars a month and they will monitor your social security number and alert you any time credit is applied for in your name.

The first thing to do with any ID theft or card fraud is to file a police report to get it on record. Get a new CC# from your card companies. After that close off your credit reports. I think if you do one they have to notify the others but check on that. The police can tell you more about what you have to do.
I had my ID stolen once due to a former employer dumping records in the trash without shredding them in a secure manner. I did the above and that ended it. I didn't have to call any of the bogus creditors. They wouldn't have believed -me- anyway.
